Re: Levitz Furniture
The Levitz Furniture that was near me, on Lincoln Highway (AKA Business US Route 1), in Langhorne/Levittown, PA, is still vacant since the entire chain went under. Is that the one in the shopping center with Home Depot, BJs, Petsmart, and Dick's? Or did they have two stores close together? The one ...

Re: Modern Genuardi's closures
Also - Feasterville was a replacement store for an old old Genuardi's that was converted to a Mad Grocer at one point. They then closed that, bulldozed it, and built the new Genuardi's. That store was always pretty busy! The Acme across the street was actually a relo for an old store that was on th...

Re: Old Supermarket Mystery North Wales/Montgomeryville, PA
But anyway, I just noticed something... why are Whole Foods and AMC close together but in different buildings both here and in Greentree NJ? That cinema was built as an AMC, and the Whole Foods was an IGA but never a Fresh Fields. And Plymouth Meeting Mall has a Whole Foods now on the site of the o...

Re: Old Supermarket Mystery North Wales/Montgomeryville, PA
And I know the AMC cinema in the parking lot was built in 1986 but replaced a "Budco" theater on the same site. The AMC 309 Cinema 9 opened in the 1960's as Budco 309 Cinema. It had two screens added in the early 1980's, and had 5 theatres added in 1986. The shopping center that's across ...

Re: Possible former JCPenney
I have what I think is a funny story about that location. When the WalMart people started peeling away the facade, the area behind it looked familiar. I asked one of the Petsmart managers who is pretty young if it was a Korvettes shopping center. She said "no, it was a Staples." I told he...

Re: The Old Genuardi's Logo
The logo switch happened shortly after the original 5 Genuardi brothers sold Genuardi Supermarkets Inc. to their sons.

Fount the location of Penn Fruit Company's Center City location, which was at the SE corner of 19th and Market Street, across from the RKO Stanley Warner's Stanley Theatre.
The Penn Fruit was demolished in 1972, and the Stanley Theatre a year later.

Re: Bradlee's/Caldor
Most Caldors in the Philadelphia area were brand new builds. The exception are the Caldor in Willingboro, NJ, and the Caldor in Cinnamisson, NJ. These two Caldors were in a former Woolco location. Today, the Willingboro Caldor ( as well as the Acme and the Village Mall ) is a Flea Market building, a...

Re: Did Centennial A&Ps Have Roof Truss?
Sorry I worded that wrong. I should've said I don't know if ANY of the centennial A&P's used truss roofing. I honestly don't know. Sorry for the confusion. It would be just the front part of the A&P Centennial/Colonial buildings that would've used truss roofing. The other 5/6 of the buildin...

Re: Gro Warehouse
At the Albertsons Super Saver Stores in TX, FL, and LA they are using Acme as the primary store brand. I guess this related to Super Saver being originally an Acme brand in the 1960's. Meanwhile one Super Saver still operates in NorCal in Woodland but does everything as the conventional NorCal Albe...

Well, in a few short weeks, Giant [PA] will be opening it's first store in Philadelphia itself, at Grant Avenue, east of Roosevelt Boulevard.

Re: Giant Food in Philadelphia Area
What i think will happen is they will replace the generic "Giant" logo (the one based on the old Finast logo) with the Giant [PA] logo for the products sold at Giant [PA] and Martin's, and use the "fruit slice" logo for Giant [MD] and Stop & Shop

Re: Acme's Logo
1: It was 1961 when Acme Markets Inc. (American Stores Company at this point changed their name to Acme Markets, Inc., and this would last until 1974, when the name reverted back to American Stores Company), right around the same time Acme started building the "a-frame" stores. 2: Yes 3: A...
