Former Colonial/Big Star

I'm going to be travelling South next month, and wondered if anyone had info on any former Colonial/Big Star locations that are still operating as supermarkets. I am going to be driving from Jacksonville FL to Savannah GA to Augusta GA to Aiken SC to Charleston and then back. I would appreciate any ...

There were two Sky City stores in Augusta, GA back in the 70's and early 80's. The oldest one was downtown on Broad Street--and was junky, dirty, and busy. I believe it was right next to a main stop for the city bus, and it and Woolworths were close to each other. The other one was out toward the ed...

Furr's Cafeterias are still in Oklahoma and Texas. Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's their food was very good. Their deserts especially. Now they are all you can eat for one price........the problem is the food is so bad, you can hardly eat one plate!

There were Walgreen Agency drug stores here in Oklahoma. I guess they were kind of like franchises or something. They were locally owned, but did carry some of the Walgreen private label items. Mostly smaller stores in smaller towns. Longs still has (as of last summer) several stores in Colorado Spr...

Several old Safeways/Tom Thumb/ Randalls in this part of the country are antique malls. I have seen some that were converted to Dollar General or Family Dollar taking half of the building, and some other retail taking the second half.

The Super K-Mart in the Denver area (can't remember which suburb) is supplied by Nash Finch for their groceries, and carries mostly Our Family brand, with a little American Fare thrown in. The milk, bread, and some paper and cleaning items carried the American Fare label.

The house brand items from the late 80's or early 90's that were the second tier were called Harris Teeter Mor- (or More?) Value. I have a couple of items from this era that are called this. The logo was in red lettering, and a different look than today's Harris Teeter logo. Used to travel that way ...

Sorry, forgot to mention. Yes, David, Food World is still an ongoing division of Brunos/BiLo. I have these stores all over Alabama--they may be in other states too. Brunos was always the more upscale market, and Food World was "The Low Price Leader", according to their advertisements.

There were Food World stores here in the Midwest also--Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska that I know of. These were around in the 70's and early 80's. They were licensed by Scrivner (the wholesaler that was acquired by Fleming). Since they were independents, some of them remained that after Fleming got ...

Food Club Stores owned by Publix?

Back in another thread, someone had mentioned that Publix had owned stores called Food Club. I went back through trying to find it, but didn't. Anyway, how many of these stores were there? How were they different from regular Publix stores? Did these stores (or Publix) use Food Club as their house b...

Belscot used to have a store in Tulsa. It was pretty much a dump---kind of like a cross between Spartan Atlantic and Gibsons. It lasted until the late 70's, I think.

There was a Phar Mor here in Oklahoma City for several years, It went in remodeled space from a former IGA and TG&Y Family Center. In fact, just the other day, I ran across my old Phar Mor check cashing card. And yes, their specials were called Power Buys.

I'm leaning more toward A&P. This looks very similar to stores they had in the Atlanta area in the 1980's.

In several Alabama cities in the mid to late 80's----there were Food Giant stores adjacent to Kmart......probably originally Kmart Food. The Food Giant logo on their brand of products was very similar to the current Food Lion logo.....I found a couple of vanilla extract bottles still in their origin...
