Wal Mart here still has the paper ice cream bags..... On a side note, when I worked for Skaggs Albertsons in 1974 when they came to Oklahoma, we had big rolls of brown paper at each checkstand that we used to wrap fresh meat purchases in. Most people liked the idea, it kept the paper bags (which wer...

Yes, the Oklahoma Turnpike locations had this same design. There were several locations along the turnpikes......however, they are all long gone. There are many of these buildings still around in Oklahoma towns......Phillips was very big here in Oklahoma, their refinery and headquarters was (is) in ...

Actually, I think several of the brands we know as Safeway Brands were this way. I've seen advertisements in old magazines from the 40's and 50's that are like this. The main one that comes to mind is Edwards Coffee......and I had also seen the White Magic one. There are several more.....if I can co...

Haven't been by there in a year or so, but there was a Food Depot in Anniston, AL next to KMart in a former KMart Foods location.

It has been there many years......seems like it was supplied by Supervalu.

The ice-cream product was actually "Mellorene"---at least at Safeway. It was totally nasty. Safeway's private label was called "Joyette". I guess this was to distinguish it from the ice cream and ice milk that had the Lucerne labels.

I was in a K Mart in Albuquerque this summer that still had the neon red and turquoise sign intact. The store itself had been remodeled several times though, it appeared.

The last time I visited a Safeway in Memphis was 1978......don't know how much longer they were there after that. Don't remember the exact location.

I never knew Kroger left Memphis in the 70's...........as far as I knew, there were stores there continuously thru the last 40 years or so anyway....

There was a Schnucks Walgreens in Fort Smith, Arkansas from around 1977 till the early 1980's. Didn't last very long. That was about the time Skaggs Albertsons (probably by then just Skaggs or maybe Skaggs Alpha Beta) started moving into Arkansas.

Regency Mall in Augusta, Georgia seemed sort of doomed from the start also. It was built in 1976 or 1977--and was touted as the largest mall in Georgia. It had three anchor stores, Montgomery Ward, JB White, and Belk. Actually seemed to pretty well the first couple of years, until the Augusta Mall w...

Eckerd got their start in Oklahoma by purchasing Wards Cut Rate Drugs, which was a chain from Texas, I believe. Their stores were older and smaller for the first few years......but a lot of people shopped there. They got the prescription files from the Treasury Drug stores here in the OKC area (owne...

There's a 1970's A&P ad on Ebay now, with a slogan that I had forgotten about. "Price and Pride---If we can't do it--nobody can!" There is a picture of two men in white shirts, ties, and white aprons--one says Price on the apron, and the other says Pride. Maybe the slogan today should ...

One of my hobbies is collecting old trading stamps. I have probably got about 200 or so different books of them.
