Former 1954 Safeway San Francisco - 3132 Clement St.
I also found a photo of this now-demolished Safeway in The San Francisco Examiner archives, from April 1989. A new six-story building housing Safeway and apartments above was being proposed. Love that embedded circle 'S': <a href="https://www.newspapers.com/clip/49244042/safeway-3132-clement-st...

Former 1955 Safeway - 303 Highland Ave, National City
At 28,900 square feet total, this Safeway claimed to have the largest sales floor area of any of their stores at the time. It opened in October 1955: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/49229497/safeway-3rd-highland-grand-opening/ https://www.newspapers.com/clip/49246141/ It also shows up in some 1970 p...

Re: New location list: San Mateo County
The Thrifty Drug at 19:30 was in Corte Madera Center up in Marin. The drugstore interior shots at the beginning are the inside of that Walgreen's in Westborough Square. The "Food Center" seen at 22:46 was in Westlake shopping center in Daly City, opposite the mall from JC Penney seen to th...

King's Court Shopping Center, Los Gatos
Here is a 1960s aerial photo of the King's Court shopping center, located at Blossom Hill Rd. & Los Gatos Blvd. in Los Gatos, CA. The shopping center opened in December 1960, and featured a 22,000-square-foot Safeway. That former Safeway is now Lunardi's, and it carries a false facade which obsc...

This bi-level shopping plaza built on a hillside opened in 1963. The Safeway-anchored shopping center is extant, though it was recently renovated.

...Ready For It? This Safeway/Thrifty Drug combo is at 3528 & 3526 W Cactus Rd. in Phoenix-they are now Pep Boys & Nick's Furniture. This plaza was built in 1971, and the original streetlamps are still in the parking lot. As you can see, the former Safeway had its awning altered a little. Th...

Re: Salem Center Mall, Salem, Oregon
Salem Center Mall was originally called Nordstrom Mall. The Meier and Frank opened in 1955, and the Rite Aid was a PayLess that opened in 1963. The building was halved in the early 2000s, and the other half became TJ Maxx. The Meier and Frank building has a small mezzanine sales floor only accessibl...

This Woolworth's closed in 1989. You can still see the original terrazo floor in the stock room through the doors on the left wall, near the center.

This illustrates well how sturdily built these stores were, with all that truss work and such.pinkfloyd95209 wrote:And The Work Has Already Begun. The Start Of The Gutting To Become A Dollar General Store. Photo courtesy of Ron Chapman (as well as the above) Photo taken today, 1-9-2012.

Re: Modesto, CA former Lucky (?)
The Modesto Lucky on Dale/Standiford is my all time fave grocery store. We went there several times a week. It was next to a Long's Drug store. While Save Mart may have acquired the building in 97, they had stopped being Lucky long before that. Actually, this store was still a Lucky until 1997; I r...

Re: Centro-Mart First Location Photo
VERY nice photos, thanks for sharing. Groceteria has a black and white close-up of this store on his flickr photostream. Even though the neon sign read CentrOMart, the sign on the window read Daylite Market. I think the CentrOMart's in downtown Brentwood and Oakley originally went under Daylite Mark...
