The stupidest I remember wasn't grocery related. It was a slogan for Kinney Shoe Stores: "We only sell the right shoe." That always made me think: No left shoes?

There were quite a few strip malls in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho that at one time had both Albertsons and PayLess Drug. I have also seen a few that were Safeway and PayLess. There was one on State Street in Boise, Idaho as I recall where a strip mall (Plantation shopping center) had an Albertsons...

most modern cash registers have the ability to approve checks electronically as well by reading the numbers off the check. Call me old fashioned but I actually prefer checks to debit cards.

Rite Aid is actually right now doing a major remodel of its Longview, WA store which opened in the 1960s as a Pay'N Save store and did not change a whole lot over the years. There are still several large Rite Aid stores in Washington, Idaho and Oregon which were former Payless stores as well, some s...

One has to wonder if there was too much name confusion with Lowe's Home Centers.

I happened to visit the flea market at the old Centralia-Chehalis Yard Birds a few months back. I want to add that the grocery section is still in operation under the Shop 'N Kart name, and the theater appeared to still be in operation. Most of the original Yard Birds signs are still up as well. How...

"Bi-Mart was retained by TPI as an independently operating subsidiary and was sold by Rite Aid to some investors, who have in turn I think ended up selling the chain to employees within the past year or so (don't quote me on this). " This is correct, Bi-Mart mentions that fact quite often ...

I should add that Safeway updated the logo on the store and main signs only. They did not update the logo on the gas station at the same location, or any of its signs.

Safeway logos

A Safeway near my home recently remodeled and has an updated "S" logo where the S is white and the squared area is red, almost a reversal of the previous logo. The Safeway letters are now black, and backlit with white at night. What year did Safeway switch from the round S to the square S ...

A few people have told me about a chain called Keil's which went away during the late 70s or early 80s. How big were they? As a side note, I was told one of the former owners of that chain owns the Fourth Plain Center in Vancouver, which is home to a Safeway that closed last year that started life a...

Circle K has been around for a while. I think they are based in Arizona. I do remember in the 80s, there were quite a few in Boise, Idaho which were older buildings with sloped ceilings, then remodeled for a more modern appearance. At that time it seemd that only a few also sold gasoline.

In Kelso, Washington, a late 70's era Safeway is now "Hilander Family Fun Center' which has a bowling alley, kids play area/arcade, and restaurant. Also in Kelso, the marina style building Safeway used before moving in the 70s still stands, and is currently a thrift store, but the building's co...

The first Albertsons was located at 16th and State Streets in Boise. The original store was replaced at the same location sometime in the early 80s and has since been remodeled. In Boise, Idaho, a former Buttrey Food and Drug store is now the home of KBCI Channel 2, a CBS affiliate. Buttrey sold their Boise stores to Albertsons in the mid-80s, this particular location was only a few blocks from 16th and State Street where Albertsons built a new store in the early 80s on the...
