Re: Acme Markets closing another round of stores
Could you name any current/former Safeways anywhere near Baltimore/DC from around the same period? A few others that come to mind: 1) Former Safeway at 598 Cranbrook Road in Timonium/Cockeysville, MD. Now Merritt Athletic Club and Valley Mansion by Martins (a catering facility) 2) Former Safeway at...

Re: Nu-Way Markets
I would say that Gerry is correct. Here is a link to a photo of a Nu-Way Supermarket taken during the Grand Opening of the Thruway Plaza in Cheektowaga (suburban Buffalo), NY in 1952. http://wnyheritagepress.org/photos_week_2006/thruway_plaza/thruway_plaza.htm The store looks quite similar to Acme M...

Re: Waldbaum's in upstate New York
The was also a Waldbaum's in Vails Gate, NY at the intersection of NY Route 32, NY Route 94, & NY Route 300. The location was previously a Barkers Discount Department Store and is now a Price Chopper supermarket. I liked this store very much - probably just as much as the barrel roofed Shop Rite...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites
I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd add a bit here. There's a former Jack in the Box in New Paltz,NY that is still standing today. It was a mountain sport shop for some time and is turning into a Hookah Shop. I'll get a picture if you are interested. There was a Jack in the Box location in Vails...

Re: Why traditional supermarkets have been dying
Hi, Yes , Port Jervis is a poor City with a high crime rate. Acme and A&P both pulled out in tthe late 70!s and early 80!s due to major floods and poverty as well as crime. The former A&P became a Sav A Lot and closed. It may not be Newburgh, but it isn!t a fun place, Wow, I remember workin...

Re: Richway and/or Value City
The Value City Furniture in Baltimore, oddly enough, is a former Service Merchandise, and was next to a Target Greatland. Wait a minute, they had Value City that early? I thought it was an 80's chain. If you are referring to the Nottingham Square (White Marsh, MD/suburban Baltimore County) Value Ci...

Gerry, There was a Big V Shop-Rite Supermarket on NY Rt 32 in Vails Gate, NY that looked exactly like the Metro Supermarket in Toronto, Ontario shown in this link: http://www.groceteria.com/2009/08/18/metro-former-grand-union-15-ellesmere-road-toronto/ http://www.groceteria.com/wp-content/uploads/20...

Re: Acme in New York
The chain that Acme bought in Western New York was "Nu-Way". There was a Acme/Nu-Way warehouse on Bailey Ave. and Broadway in Buffalo that also included a S&H Green Stamps redemption center. The are many former Acme locations still standing in Buffalo and Western New York State includi...

Re: Old central Maryland / southern central Pennsylvania retail?
The A-Frame Safeway in Frederick, MD was closed in 1987 and replaced by the 7th St. Safeway.
There is an old Acme A-Frame on W. Patrick St. across from the Comcast offices that has been converted to other uses.

Re: Old central Maryland / southern central Pennsylvania retail?
There was a Carmack-Jay's supermarket on the corner of W. Patrick St. (US 40) and Willowdale Drive. It was a 24-hour store operated as a division of Weis Supermarkets based in Sunbury, PA. The store is now a SuperPetz store, another division of Weis Markets. I believe the chain was a local Frederick...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
Yes, "TYFSAK" is an acronym for "Thank You For Shopping At K-Mart". At the K-Mart locations in the Buffalo, NY Metro Area (and most likely, many other areas), each NCR 280 installed in the store had a sticker placed to the left of the keypad that emphasized the phrase "TYFSA...

According to "The Weis Project", the Weis Supermarket at the Newburgh Mall is now Bed, Bath, & Beyond. http://www.weisproject.com/past_detail.php?num=7 Weis was located just to the left of the main entrance to the mall and was a stand alone store. Also, Weis was one of the original ten...
