LA Cafeterias

A kind of sad story in today's LA Times on the demise of cafeterias in Southern California: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-cafeteria3nov03,1,1220019.story?coll=la-headlines-california If you've never been to Clifton's downtown, I have a feeling you should probably visit soon, before it's co...

I took another look at that map of Safeway and A&P's territories from the late 1950's. I was kind of surprised at how little overlap there was. A&P really never had a significant presence west of the Mississippi; there were two small west coast divisions and pretty much nothing between the ...

I'm informed via email that this store started as a Miracle Mart, ultimately owned by Steinberg's, who sold out to A&P. All of which makes sense given that it's now an A&P-owned Food Basics.

I wonder, did any of these downtown, urban renewal, shopping malls (so popular in the 60's & 70's) succeed? The answer pretty much seems to be "no"". Two particularly odd ones were in Redding CA and Rock Hill SC, where they actually put a roof over main street and built an interi...

There was a shopping center Lucky store at 10700 San Pablo in El Cerrito, which started out as part of the defunct Food Farm chain before becoming Lucky and then Alberstons. There is a Safeway in the center next door. There was also a freestanding Lucky near the intersection of San Pablo and MacDona...

The only A&P stores I know of on the west coast were in the SoCal and Seattle areas. A&P left SoCal in 1969 and Seattle several years later. There were also stores in Bakersfield through the late 1940s. I'm not aware of any past presence in Northern California, particularly one that would ha...

As for that guide of shopping centers you have, does it have any photos or anything like that? It's a text-only book published in 1964 listing centers all over the US and Canada. There are occasional innacuracies; I believe they relied on a mailed questionnaire for their data. I think it was design...

My 1964 shopping center guide lists the center as being open, but doesn't include the original opening date, square footage, etc. as it does for many other centers. There is a tenant list, though: Safeway Shell Service Station Beauty Shop Barber Shop TV Sales and Repair Dress Shop Ben Franklin Thrif...

What's the nearest cross street? It's 7300N, so the nearest major street should be Touhy. The problem is I'm not 100% certain of the address, since I didn't write it down. I got it by doing a search on the name of the bike shop. I'm thinking it may have been a little farther south, actually. EDIT: ...

It's not the "shadow's shadow" - there is an R of a different font at the rightmost edge of the front face, a good foot or two past the shadow of the current R. I see it too, but I think it's just a compression artifact. Nothig like that shows up in my original full-size photo. That said,...

Indeed, but Kohl's was only in Wisconsin, I think -- and they even had a fairly limited range there.

Interestingly enough, even though there is definitely no connection to the "legitimate" Safeway, Preston Safeway has no qualms about using the "lifestyle" font, as I noticed last week at the 5040 East 16th Street store in Indianapolis:
