That's actually a pretty common set-up for newer Safeway stores.

Re: Vons on Catalina Island: former Safeway?

Actually, it may be, if only for this reason: Safeway's genesis lies in a three-chain merger (Skaggs, Seelig, MacMarr) and with all the stores renamed to Safeway over a period of time, none of them really are the "first Safeway" per se. To be more precise, the mergers happened as a sequen...

FYI, there is a pre-existing thread on Tianguis here:

If we could keep all future posts on that chain over in that thread instead, it would be cool...

In Richmond and probably other parts of Virginia, the entry of Farmer Jack wasn't an expansion but a rebranding of former A&P and Pantry Pride stores They did this in Raleigh NC as well, in 1996, shortly before leaving the region entirely. Allied had an odd collection of separated markets--Detr...

Safeway entered New York via the acquisition of Daniel Reeves stores in 1941. Most of their early geographic expansion was through acquisition.

I wish I had a clue about what could be done. I'd drive up myself if I weren't flying to the west coast for Thanksgiving with the in-laws this weekend. It's a depressing thought that they may be just thrown away. If anyone can arrange temporary storage, I might be able to give a home to a couple of ...

Very cool articles! Is this location still open?? If you mean the location shown in the original article at the beginning of the thread, yes. It's at 15 Marina Boulevard in San Francisco. It's been expanded, and the interior has been remodeled a few times, but it still has its Marina facade. The mu...

Re: Whittier, CA Mystery Store

(Please Note: I apologize if this is in the wrong forum) Thanks for caring. Yes, anything that involves questions about specific locations should now go in the Commercial Archaeology forum. From looking at the front, I was going to suggest Mayfair, but it looks a little too deep for that. They were...

It sure looks a lot like this location, unless they built more than one store with this prototype; http://www.groceteria.com/stockton/gallery/pages/Image22.html http://www.groceteria.com/stockton/gallery/pages/Image23.html Agreed. It's the only one in Stockton that apparently was built from the gro...

Finallly remembered the picture:

This was taken in May 2005, I thought I remembered the roof still being its original yellow, but it doesn't seem so from this picture. I'm pretty sure it was yellow as recently as a couple of years ago.
