Here's a similar one from Redding CA, which looks a little less modified than Stoockton was at closing: http://groceteria.com/forboard/redding.jpg It was sort of a variation on the gable. I vaguely remember another similar one in Chico or one of the Sacramento suburbs, which would make sense if ther...

Actually 1801 W 11th is the replacement for 1950 W 11th, across the street, which is now Save Mart. The 1950 W. 11th store was a marketplace store which, if I recall correctly, was remodeled into the late 1990s/early 2000s (dark brown, gold, etc.) decor just before it relocated across the street. I...

It also could have been a Nob Hill; they used a gable design in some locations too.

Photo of the Stockton store mentioned above, which was recently relocated: http://www.groceteria.com/stockton/gallery/images/26.jpg It's definitely a prototype I've seen a few other places, none of which come to mind right off the top of my head. Perhaps this same team was responsible for all of them.

Photo of the Fairfield location, from the book "Main Street to Miracle Mile": http://groceteria.com/forboard/farmers.jpg I know of a couple of Sacramento locations. I think they were pretty much ocnfined to the Central Valley, but may have had some locations in far-flung parts of the Bay A...

Re: "The Day After"-TV Movie (1983) - IGA

There was an IGA store in the 1983 ABC-TV movie, "The Day After." I have that on DVD and will try to get some captures up before too long. I remember seeing the movie the night it aired in a large auditorium on my college campus. It was one of the creepiest pieces of film I'd ever seen up...

Indianapolis, Chicago, and Toronto

Just FYI, I've finally posted more photos from my recent road trip: http://www.groceteria.com/journal/2006/11.html#112606 I know there aren't any Safeway or California pictures here, but I thought some of you might be interested in a slight change of perspective (or geography) from what's been domin...

Spammers and Other Notes

Hi all. Hope you had a great holiday. A few spam posts made their way onto the board while I was out of town. This is going to happen from time to time because I don't monitor the board 24/7, especially when I'm on holiday. It may take a day or two when I'm out of town, but I will ban them and delet...

That's actually a pretty common set-up for newer Safeway stores.

Re: Vons on Catalina Island: former Safeway?

Actually, it may be, if only for this reason: Safeway's genesis lies in a three-chain merger (Skaggs, Seelig, MacMarr) and with all the stores renamed to Safeway over a period of time, none of them really are the "first Safeway" per se. To be more precise, the mergers happened as a sequen...

In Richmond and probably other parts of Virginia, the entry of Farmer Jack wasn't an expansion but a rebranding of former A&P and Pantry Pride stores They did this in Raleigh NC as well, in 1996, shortly before leaving the region entirely. Allied had an odd collection of separated markets--Detr...

Safeway entered New York via the acquisition of Daniel Reeves stores in 1941. Most of their early geographic expansion was through acquisition.
