Re: Albertsons in Houston

I'm not sure where the problems began as in 1991, the DFW division had reached College Station, but a few years later, Albertsons was in the Conroe area, and those were apparently part of the Houston area later because they were sold to Kroger in 2002. Albertsons entered in 1996 but pulled out in 20...

"Albertsons Market"

Quick background: we should know that Albertsons Inc. broke into two companies in 2006, one "Albertsons LLC" (owned by Cerberus under "AB Acquisitions LLC" and "New Albertsons Inc." (owned by SuperValu, had what were considered to be the stronger divisions). At some poi...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX

Wichita Falls sounds like it was Dallas division, which was broken up (which would probably be worth telling--I heard lot of its stores were too small and old, something that screwed over AppleTree from Day One, and that Minyards took some)--I never said that there were no Marina stores in Texas, so...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX

Like I said, it would've mentioned in advertising between the 1950s and 1970s in the papers, and I had a friend who subscribes to Newspapers.com had searched. [Name], Newspapers.com has The Hearne Democrat from 1931 through 1977, mostly complete. I searched "Safeway" and "Safe-Way&quo...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX

The Hearne Democrat is online in Newspapers.com, featuring newspapers there that go from the 1950s to the 1970s (roughly). Besides a mention of a Safeway opening in Bryan opening in the late 1950s (the first in the area, long before the Houston division), there's no mention of a Safeway in Hearne. T...

Florida Choice

I know that Florida Choice was Kroger's run in Florida in the 1980s after they took over The Family Mart (A&P), but what was it really like? What did the logo look like, for instance? Did Kroger remodel or get any new stores so it resembled more of the typical Kroger at the time?

Thanks

Re: Safeways of the 1980s and Early 1990s

Well, here is a shot of "Kroger of the Villages", which was an early 1970s build renovated at the last minute of the Texas pullout in the late 1980s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KrogerattheVillages.jpg A few newly-built examples survive. Décor on the inside consisted of pictures of t...

Re: Modern Kroger designs in Marietta

Had to look up what a "wedge" Kroger was. As for the design, I can't recall seeing any wedge Krogers built in Texas (mostly greenhouses or whatever they picked up), but I could be wrong (Texas was a funny market--Kroger Family Centers still had a full selection of general merchandise into ...

Re: When/how did Kroger "conquer" the South?

Even though Kroger is an Ohio company, was Texas ever their most profitable state/region? How did they manage to overtake Weingarten's, Safeway, and Randalls in Houston? And does anyone know the history of their store in Denison (home of Eisenhower)? This looks like an oldie that may have started a...

Did Ann & Hope have a supermarket?

Something I read in Labelscar says that did, though I can't find any information more (or contradicting that). Anyone have any confirmation/denial?

Re: Inside bigg's

That would imply, then, that it was all store? I know that many of the hypermarkets padded their square footage with the "mini-mall", and that the actual space would be much less (comparable to modern supercenters).

Early H-E-B stores (before the 2000s)

Does anyone have any information on older H-E-B stores? Given that I'm only familiar with the Houston area H-E-B stores, I need help. From that, they first opened H-E-B Pantry Foods stores (small grocery stores 30,000 square feet) in suburban areas (mid-sized areas that weren't small towns but not h...

Re: Hinky Dinky and their leased grocery departments

According to Wikipedia, "Supermarkets International" leased food departments in the Treasury discount stores (and even a few JCPenney stores). JCPenney bought them in '69 but shut it down a few years later.

Re: Target '90s neon

I imagine the first generation SuperTargets had neon and the like on them as well.

Interesting that it started in 1990: the 1989 Gold Circle/Richway conversions did NOT have neon.
