Re: Kroger in Washington DC

The Rockville location was Magruder's for a long time. Now it seems to be a Chinese restaurant. The Kensington address might be missing a digit. The most obvious candidate for it would be Strosniders (hardware) but I think that was an old Acme and the address is on Connecticut Ave. Is the Rockville...

Re: Kroger in Washington DC

As part of my Kroger project I've done more digging and discovered the roots of this division stem from the acquisition of Food Town (not related to Lion) in 1960 followed by a rebranding in 1961. I don't know much about this Food Town but I do know they opened some stores in Washington proper, Alex...

Re: history of Giant stores

That's a great list BatteryMill, thank you for sharing! I have multiple friends and family that work for the chain and everything on the list looks great, especially considering the recent relocation of stores they've been doing. My only comments or updates are: Proposed/Upcoming Stores: Dumfries: ...

Re: history of Giant stores

It’s been awhile since I’ve been around Minnesota Ave, so I don’t know if any fragment of Greenway the housing project or the plaza still exists. It also had a Grand Union, which probably started out as the Dc-not-Philly Food Fair. The wiki for the housing project made it sound like it was built on...

Re: history of Giant stores

A few edits. All numbers are pre-Ahold. #3 is a CVS. It was a long running Hechingers that was much loved and hated by people in NW DC. Loved because there were fewer decent sized hardware stores in DC than now. The store had rooftop parking which was part of what people hated. The grade was rather...

Re: history of Giant stores

Hello! I do not believe there are books on the subject matter, but there have been a good deal of general timelines as well as insights into the leaders of Giant from 1936 through 1995. I have compiled a list of nearly every store through the present day though, if you have any suggestions let me kn...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

When did Kroger even adopt the store numbering? I found an old directory that listed the Kroger at Jones Road and FM 1960 (long gone, I believe even before they bought out the Albertsons across the street) as a "No. 1711". Was this the original Houston division store numbering? 4-digit st...

Re: The Kroger Co. Store List Project

They used the Western division in advertising but not the Eastern. It looks like you found Barney’s and Bi-Lo outside the Cleveland area. Those banners were used after they left the immediate Cleveland area but still had the Division there. Barney’s were in former discount stores and were a warehou...

Re: The Kroger Co. Store List Project

I’m traveling and have iffy WiFi thus far, but I’ll try to add some things later this month. Kroger had two adjacent buildings in Solon, Ohio dating from the 50s—a DC and a bakery, both still in use. They also had a building at E 59th and Tuscan Ave in Cleveland which may have been discussed here i...

The Kroger Co. Store List Project

Over the past year me and some of my friends have been working on a store list for Kroger and its subsidiaries. This list dates from Kroger's inception in 1883 (and even earlier with JayC/Ralphs), and includes a number of surprises throughout Kroger's history, as well as several long-lost retail his...

Re: NEW: El Paso, 1925-2020

Seems as if Smith's was in town before 1990. Was this the "Food King" operation?

Also looks as if 10060 Rushing Rd was still Smith's in 2006. I haven't seen anything to suggest Smith's was in El Paso past the 2001 store swap with Furr's.

Re: Mystery stores in Terre Haute, IN

Last week, I braved the US-Canadian border to go on a seven-state trip to Nashville, Tennessee and back. One of the cities I passed through on the way was Terre Haute, Indiana, famous home of Columbia House and their "12 CDs for a penny" offers...and this city had a wealth of mysterious e...

Re: I made a list of A&P locations... And I need your help with it

Hey guys, About a year ago I made a Google Sheet of A&P locations. The list doesn't just contain A&P locations. It contains locations of A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum's, Super Fresh, etc. Basically whatever brand A&P owned. The list also contains A&P's international locations. The aim...

9123 Galene Dr : An early-1980s greenhouse store, still standing vacant with an original exterior. The closure must have been fairly recent; the 2019 GSV footage still shows a Kroger logo on the vestibule wall. From what I know that one was only open for a few years, and served primarily as a maint...

Was this chain ever folded into Richfood (later SuperValu and UNFI)? I recall there were some exchanges with Shoppers of Washington, D.C. as well.
