Re: Castle-Like Restaurant (Not White Castle) in Cleveland
Very cool! Thanks for the information! It's a very cool building and it's a shame it's sitting abandoned! It must have been something back in the day!

Re: TG&Y
This is from Wikipoo, so it may or may not be accurate. (I've always heard those same last names in reference to the chain, but this is the first I've come across first names)
The chain was named for its three founders: Rawdon E. Tomlinson, Enoch L. "Les" Gosselin, and Raymond A. Young

Castle-Like Restaurant (Not White Castle) in Cleveland
This is along Euclid Avenue in Cleveland or East Cleveland, I'm not sure. It's about the size of a Wendy's but it's got these very cool turrets and flags all over the front, and it had some amazing signage judging by the frames left behind. Does anyone recognize this building? Was it a chain? http:/...

Re: Gottschalks
I'm pretty certain the store shown there is the old Weinstock's store at Fashion Fair Mall. Gottschalk's got that store in a trade with Macy's after Macy's took over Weinstock's/Emporium. Gottschalk's got the larger end anchor space while Macy's turned the old Gottschalk's anchor space into a Macy's...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
Oh, my! That reminds me of the "Thrifty" store brand liquor they used to sell before becoming Rite Aid! That stuff looked so bad I don't even think a wino would have touched it!

Re: Thrifty Junior Drug Stores
I had a friend who worked at Thrifty in the 90's, and I seem to remember him mentioning a Thrifty Jr. in LA that was tiny, only around 1,500 sq. ft. This store was brought up because they routinely refused shipments of trailers of 12-pack Cokes and similar things that kept being sent there even thou...

Re: Strange Rite Aid Remodel
I've never seen anything like this, either. Usually these old stores remained untouched until they recieved a total remodel or were closed and replaced with a small standalone store somewhere nearby.

Re: Carlsbad, CA Vons Old/Unusual Interior
If my mind is not playing tricks on me, that lettering is from the very early 80's Vons interior package and would have been surrounded by painted stripes in shades of browns and oranges similar to the stripes in the tile in the floor. (There may also have been some wood accents behind the lettering...

Ah-ha, that was a possibility I hadn't thought of. Not being from this area I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, lol.

Re: American Stores Company operated restaurants in the 1980's
I read somewhere they had a small chain of steakhouses, but I can't remember what it was called.

Re: Gottschalks
The rumor going around when I lived in California was that Penney's was interested in them. Dillard's might be another choice, since Gottschalk's is in a lot of areas where Dillard's doesn't currently do business. As far as Wikipedia, I've never been terribly impressed with it due to glaring factual...

Re: Gottschalks
I bet the store in Fresno's Manchester Center will be gone... It opened in 1976, but was pretty much dead along with the rest of the mall by 1988. When I was last there, the entire upper level was a clearance center, they had closed off all mall access to the upper level and had drywalled off parts ...

Re: Disappearing Sizzlers in your area
Their meltdown in the 90's reduced their Fresno presence to 1 restaurant. The Clovis location became Play It Again Sports, and the Blackstone and Dakota location became a Country Waffles restaurant. I do miss the TV ads with the whispered "Sizzler!" at the end.
