Foothill Shopping Center, Azusa, CA
I've always wondered about this shopping center (located on the corner of Citrus and Alosta), which looks to me like it hasn't been radically modified since it was built (which I always suspected to be in the 50s.) I was at Borders last night browsing through a book on Azusa, and there was a picture...

Ray's Aisle Hanger
You'd think they'd give a little more thought to the way they list things on the aisle hangers-- Ray's 1B combo of "DAIRY - CHEESE - DIAPERS" is pretty disgusting. (Or at least unappetizing!)

The Bon Marché Crystal Tea Room Menu
Loved that menu! I wonder what would happen if you walked into a restaurant today and asked for "The Shopper's Quickie"?

Contra Costa Center
I believe the theater was originally a single-screen operation, called either Century or Century 21. And at one time, the mall housed the only branch location of Oakland's famous Fenton's Creamery. It didn't last long-- only a few years in the 70s, I believe. Just this past month Fenton's opened ano...

Charleston Former Piggly Wiggly
The coverage on NPR tonight about the tragic fire in the furniture showroom in Charleston (where nine firefighters were killed) stated that the building housing the showroom had been built as a Piggly Wiggly.

Hink's
Hink's (to the best of my knowledge) only had the one location on Shattuck in Berkeley. I only recall going in there a few times. It was fairly small, I think-- maybe just three floors, like an old downtown-type JCPenney. They had a series of memorable radio ads in the 70s touting their "old-fa...

Pleasant Hill Mayfair
I can't picture a Mayfair at the Monument/680 intersection, unless it was in the shopping center with the Montgomery Ward and the Century Theater (on the east side of 680.) On the west side of 680 there used to be an Albertson's/PayLess combo, both now long gone.

Just a guess ...
Given the size and location of the store, I'd guess it's going to become some sort of Asian supermarket--either east Asian (Cerritos) or south Asian (Artesia.)

SGV Albertsons
Well, I guess we go to the same stores. See this earlier post of mine that's now on the ALL Save-Mart, Albertsons, Supervalu, and Lucky News Posts thread: The three Albertsons I frequent most often are: Monrovia : Former Lucky/Sav-On; still has Lucky interior Arcadia (Live Oak and Tyler): Always (I ...

Farmer's
The picture looks like the location, although I haven't been by there in a awhile. If it's right where Madison curves around, that's where Farmer's was. As for Cottage/Howe-- that was a KMart for many, many years. The Farmer's was on the south side of the KMart. Eventually, after Farmer's got out of...

Northwest Davis Nugget
I believe that the store opened as a Fry's, but I don't know that it was ever anything else (other than a Safeway.)

Farmer's
There was definitely a Farmer's on the south side of Madison Ave. near Manzanita in unincorporated Sacramento in the early and mid-70s. I'm pretty sure there was also one on Cottage and Howe, adjacent to K-Mart (now a Home Depot.)

Compton's
As I mentioned in the "Department Store Restaurants" thread, there was a Compton's cafeteria attached to the Walnut Creek Capwell's. I still remember their dark green ceramic custard cups filled with egg custard and nutmeg on the top.

Restaurants
I believe Capwell's in Walnut Creek, CA had some kind of a lunch counter The Walnut Creek Capwell's had a cafeteria called Compton's. I believe it was part of a chain, but I don't know of any other locations. I recall going to the Bullock's Wilshire (flagship store) Tea Room in the mid-'70s-- lots ...

Bullocks
Don't forget Bullocks' ill-fated attempt to move in to the Bay Area market. The Nordstrom stores in Walnut Creek, Stanford, and Stonestown began as Bullocks, and there were other locations in San Mateo (in the now defunct Fashion Island), Oakridge (Sears?) and Vallco (not sure what it is now.) Is th...
