Re: NEW: Spokane WA, 1925-1960
Andrew, I'm impressed you were able to find that Google cam shot, I remember the barrel roof store well, it was used for storage and for some store computer training in the early 1990s when all stores were converted to IBM 4680. The barrel roof store was converted to office space for a while (local ...

Re: NEW: Spokane WA, 1925-1960
Thank you for this. Albertsons seems to have swept into Spokane like a storm over the last three decades! It's bittersweet to see that the 1950s Safeway at 1617 W 3rd Ave lasted close to half a century in operation, only to close after 2006. It's still in operation as a supermarket, however, and it ...

Re: Mayfair Market Palm Springs
Kikla really good detective work there, I was aware there was a Mayfair at that location on South Palm Canyon when I started visiting the desert in the late 80s, but the site has been barren for quite a long time. Safeway left the 350 South Palm Canyon location sometime in the late 60s early 70s ...

Palm Springs Safeway Update
I provided a photo of the old downtown Palm Springs Safeway previously as it sat vacant from Staples exit but thought it was time for an update and photo circa 1950/1960 just as Grocery Outlet is poised to move in, the building is in very good condition and is located uniquely between two busy ...

Re: Marina Safeway in Montana - anyone know which town?
I know this store well, Safeway #259 Butte Montana, this was the Seattle Division (possibly all of Safeway) last IBM PSS 3663 store, replaced with new IBM 4680, Fall 1993. Including a picture of the installation team including me, this is what the interior of the #259 looked like on the inside, the ...

Safeway 639 Port Angeles Lincoln Street
The original Lincoln Street Safeway in Port Angeles WA opened as a Marina style in 1967, this store included the popular "Snack Bar" that were found in many Marina style stores of the 60's, this store in particular was a high profit store from opening and always a apple in the eye of Safeway Seattle ...

Palm Springs Safeway ??
I know this was posted before, but fun to share my local paper today called this a "Palm Springs" Safeway opening in 1955, locals would know this is the old Safeway in Rancho Mirage located at 71550 111, Rancho Mirage, I always thought this was a handsome store with the attractive rock wall on both ...

Palm Springs Malls Old Vons Future Now Known
The fate of the nearly shuttered Palm Springs Mall on Tahquitz is now known, it will become a College of the Desert location. Those of us who have lived or traveled to the desert for years know that the Mall began a slow death in the early 2000's long before the recession. There was a Market Basket ...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
The now-gone Safeway turned Albertsons at Overland & Vista in Boise actually used that exact register setup, with those exact scanners, for a few years after they took over the store when Safeway left Boise in the mid-1980s. I always assumed that it was a leftover Safeway system as pretty much all ...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning
I stumbled across these photos today. They appear to be of an early design for scanners installed at a Kroger in 1972-1973. Evidently the 'bulls-eye" sticker could be scanned at the register. http://idhistory.com/rca/Kroger%20Kenwood%20Supermarket%20-%20%201972-73%20photos.pdf Also an image here of ...
