Yeah, definitely a former Safeway, probably somewhere around LA. Doesn't look like it's currently a Vons.

there was also one (that was later Key Market) on El Camino Real in San Carlos in the same location as Walgreen's is now, but this is almost certainly a new building. I show that location as having been a Bell Market in 1975 as well, which seems consistent with the time frame for the subsequent ten...

I was told that the Safeway in Pacific Manor started out as a Super X market (there's a photo of one that was in San Francisco on this site) before it was Brentwood. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Brentwood and Super X were connected anyway. The 4175 Mission Street store in SF (later a Cala) ...

I can't remember for sure, but I think I've been told at some point that the Pacific Manor store was originally a Mayfair or a Brentwood -- or a Mayfair and subsequently a Brentwood and Safeway -- which wouldn't be unusual since Brentwood purchased so many Mayfair locations and was later acquired ny...

Come to think of it, the Fort Bragg Purity does kinda look a bit like the ex-Cala on Leland, too. I had never heard of Siri's - you have any more info on them? I think any similarities between the former Cala on Leland and any Siri's or Purity location is purely coincidental, alas. I don't really h...

Well done. Interesting stuff. FYI, the Cala on South Van Ness in SF (mentioned in the description of the Visitacion Valley store) was not originally a Cala. It began as a Siri's Market and was later a Purity. The former Purity on Third Street (now a church) was also a Siri's to begin with, as was (I...

The Great Midwestern Road Trip of 2006

Hi all. In a couple of weeks, my betrothed and I will be taking off on a two-week road trip to Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto. I'm hoping some of you might have some recommendations on things I should see. As always, I'm not terribly interested in new stores (unless they're really spectacular) but in...

I've seen Marinas in Kansas City and other midwestern areas, not to mention Texas. There's also a current thread on this board suggesting that one or two can be seen on Long Island in New York, but I can't confirm that for sure. KC pictured below from 1997. Sorry for the low-quality video capture: h...

Plus was an A&P experiment in about 1979-1980, just following the Tengelmann Group takeover. It was an American adaptation of a German no-frills deep discount format which used the same name. It apparently went over like a lead balloon here and was abandoned after only a year or two.

eh...I'm a lil if-y about it being a mayfair...they only have one store left and that one is in hollywood and this looks NOTHING like it....it could be an old store they just went into and cleaned up....but if mayfair closed in the 80s/90s? I'm not too sure these interiors would have survived. Corr...

Re: Liquor Barn

romleys wrote:I am about 85% that the store @ 2630 Bayshore was also a Liquor Barn at one point.
When I moved to SF in 1992, there was a liquor barn farther north on Bayshore, where it runs right next to 101. It's actually still there as a BevMo or was a little over a year ago.

SF Chronicle, 19 September 1991: In May, the ABC Market decided to move into the area after the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency purchased the Safeway site and agreed to lease the building to the supermarket chain in exchange for guaranteed neighborhood jobs. ABC agreed that 75 percent of the esti...

It was a MacFrugal's (now Big Lots) when I moved to SF in the early 1990s. The statue and stone place took over about 2000, as I recall.

Actually, I'd say that Safeway's location patterns in SF are as much a function of the city's population density as of market share. The 345 Williams location closed approximately 1986. In 1991, it reopened as ABC Market, which was owned by Cala/Bell, and subsequently was rebranded Food4Less and the...
