Re: history of Giant stores

My bad on #94. I had it confused with the store in Bethesda. #94 was enlarged rather than rebuilt. It’s always been in the ground floor of one of the Van Ness buildings (huge collection of condo/co-op/ rentals plus office buildings). They expanded into other space but basic elements remained like th...

Re: history of Giant stores

A few edits. All numbers are pre-Ahold. #3 is a CVS. It was a long running Hechingers that was much loved and hated by people in NW DC. Loved because there were fewer decent sized hardware stores in DC than now. The store had rooftop parking which was part of what people hated. The grade was rather...

Re: Fort Wayne, IN chain grocery/supermarket locations, 1925-87.

Pangle’s was a Lima, Ohio based chain. I think they had a number of stores in along the I-75 and US 30 corridors although I don’t think they made it to relatively large markets like Findlay that were closer than Fort Wayne. It’s odd that Marsh never had more stores. Fort Wayne would have been a pote...

Re: The Kroger Co. Store List Project

They used the Western division in advertising but not the Eastern. It looks like you found Barney’s and Bi-Lo outside the Cleveland area. Those banners were used after they left the immediate Cleveland area but still had the Division there. Barney’s were in former discount stores and were a warehous...

Re: The Kroger Co. Store List Project

Over the past year me and some of my friends have been working on a store list for Kroger and its subsidiaries. This list dates from Kroger's inception in 1883 (and even earlier with JayC/Ralphs), and includes a number of surprises throughout Kroger's history, as well as several long-lost retail hi...

Re: Guam- Safeway

Guam is a duty free port which would make sourcing from Asia competitive with sourcing from the US, if not cheaper. Manila is less than half the distance to Guam from Hawaii, let alone from the west coast. Very different from supplying Nome or Unalaska and the population base is big enough that you'...

Re: A&P bakery only locations?

They probably were the last major chain in include in-store bakeries, but before that they had a fairly extensive selection of house brand baked goods, more than most other chains. I dimly remember that those were among the things we went to A&P to buy. Many people fondly remember their Spanish ...

Re: Farmer Jack outside of Michigan & Ohio??

The stores out West were bought by Borman (the original operator) in 1987 and only lasted a year. They sold to A&P after they sold those stores.

Re: Farmer Jack outside of Michigan & Ohio??

Farmer Jack's was in Toledo twice: 1980s & 90s on Secor Road in a former Topps under the original Borman's management
which was an enormous store with service departments.

Then they had 4 stores built under A&P management in the early 2000s.

Re: Mystery stores in Terre Haute, IN

Super market candidates: Kroger, Standard (National Tea), Eisner (Jewel), A&P and possibly Cub (they were in Indy). The last one, oddly, looks like an old MEMCO near where I work that has been subdivided. Terre Haute would have been too small and away from their core area, but maybe it started l...

Re: NEW: Altoona, 1925-2020

Thorofare went pretty far South (Fairmont WV, East Liverpool, Ohio) by the mid 50s, but they didn't seem to go very far North, East, or West. Eastward they would have run into the dropoff of the Allegheny Plateau (Altoona is close to this) which is an adventure to drive even in dry weather in a seda...

Re: NEW: Altoona, 1925-2020

A&P had a division and a warehouse in Altoona up until the 1980s. They sometimes had them in places that seemed too close to a more major city. Toledo was another, bigger example. I think they also had one in Fort Wayne.

I’m surprised Thorofare wasn’t here.

Re: NEW: Johnstown PA 1925-1960

Cupp's was acquired by American Stores and formed the nucleus of their Johnstown Division which ranged down to Morgantown WV and into the Pittsburgh area. It was never a large division and the stores were rather scattered with never more than a half dozen in Greater Pittsburgh. Paul Cupp of Cupp's e...
