The longest operating one *I* know about was the one at Fruit & McKinley here in Fresno that operated as a Safeway until 1996? when they sold the remaining skeleton of their Fresno division to Save Mart. That store is STILL operating as Save Mart, and continues to be a moneymaker for them. The ...

Safeway was my first thought as well. The other "possible" that came to mind would be Food Fair, but I think they arrived too late in Richmond for this to be one of theirs.

I am curious to know if this store was remodeled to a Marina style store later on, what would have been the reason? Pretty much for the same reasons they continue doing so today: increased square footage, better layout, and updated appearance. Most older Safeway stores that are still open have been...

Another market in Winnetka is The Grand Food Center. http://winnetkaillinois.net/grandfoodcenter.html you don't see large chain stores using these size store anymore either. Too bad they don't have their own websites I'm always curious on how long they've existed and whether or not they were constr...

A few clarifications and requests: 1. Please limit the number of photos that are actually DISPLAYED in your post. One or two per page is one thing, but when people start including 6 or 7 pictures per post, the number of photos on the page adds up fast. This presents a real problem for people who are...

Re: Non-Safeway Marina-style stores

The glass-front, arched roof design is not really peculiar to Safeway. Any number of chains and independents around the country used some form of it; it was a construction-dictated design, as it allowed a large column-free sales floor. It's not really a stretch to go from the rounded-roof pylon stor...

Thanks. Any others? I leave on Saturday. Are any other Dominick's stores old and worthy of a look? Any neighborhood commercial strips I shouldn't miss? And what parts of Chicago should I flat out avoid? I've spent some time there in the past, but it's been almost ten years and I'm not usre how much ...

It woiuldn't surprise me in the least if this had originally been a Safeway/Super S combo, based on the uniform architecture.

We recently had our house sprayed by the exterminator, and afterward the whole place smelled exactly like the entrance to a Kmart or Woolworth's used to. We determined that smell was either stale popcorn, stale candy, or a combination of the two (caramel corn, maybe?).

The rounded roof was extremely common in the 1950s; just about every chain used some sort of variation on it. It was dictated by construction needs rather than aesthetics.

Connection Between National Tea and Big Bear/North Carolina?

Just wondering if any of you might have any knowlege if there was ever a connection between National Tea and the Big Bear stores of northern North Carolina. I keep finding snippets that refer to "National Food Stores" as the parent company of Big Bear/NC in the 1960s, but I know it was als...
