The moderator has a pic of the Arcadia store as an A&P. I know from experience that the stiore was a Pic-n-Save from 1980 until it became another outlet store. I don't know about the 1970s.

Kroger or National would be the best guesses. National was fond on buff colored brick and this is similar to another photo you posted that looked very Kroger-ish. It may be shadow from the shadow, but I detect an "R" label scar.

National had a few stores with rounded roofs in later years. I don't think I've seen Jewels like this. Other possibilities worth raising (don't know if they ever had these designs): Hillman's (long gone chain that was upscale/downscale in an odd collection of locations) or Red Owl, which had some st...

Definitely an old Jewel--the ceramic tile and the orange stripe.

It's probably one of the stores they've closed in the last 10-15 years. They used to have a relatively small store near Eastern Market in Capitol Hill, another in Brookland near Catholic University, and they replaced a store just East of the Anacostia on Minnesota Avenue, in an area where the retail...

It's near some other enormous car dealerships on the I-10 freeway near the 610 freeway. Basically, it's just a giant parking lot. In context, it's just part of continuous, suburban sprawl.

Keep in mind that the marina style roof was pretty common for structural reasons and often was obstructed by a false front that wasn't curved. Some supermarkets took the place of other businesses that had used these roofs these like roller rinks or theatres. There was a long running Pick-n-Pay on Eu...

The 38th & Post store was probably acquired from Jewel, which opened combo stores around Indy, mostly near I-465 in the early 70s. They also had stores in Bloomington which lasted in to the late 80s, after the Indy stores had closed. Marsh has one of those. There also was a Del Farm around 38th ...

This was never part of Safeway and has been discussed before. Always a local operation and relatively small until they bought National Tea's Standard/DelFarm operation around 1982-84. That's probably how they got the Fort Wayne store. Standard had added a store or two there before being sold. At one...

The Kensington marina is a good guess--it's downhill from its surroundings, or it least it was--it was just demolished.

In the 50s, most chains built stores of about the same size--approx. 15,000 sf. There were exceptions like Food Fair and Fisher Foods (Cleveland) which built larger stores fairly early on, but until the end of the decade, they all tended to build the same rectangular boxes. Except for places like SF...

I think I may have seen this one or one like it--in an area near Mount Vernon, VA called Hollon Hall. That area is known for distinctive modernist houses from the 50s that were built to emphasize views of their wooded surroundings. It also has more traditional buildings in its business district, whi...

they've been in decline since the late 90s. The internet, Amazon, & chains like Border's that have gotten some of the genre business have all hurt them. They also made some bad decisions---too many of the smaller stores, poor management of overseas expansion, and some weak site selection in thei...
