Come to think of it, the Fort Bragg Purity does kinda look a bit like the ex-Cala on Leland, too. I had never heard of Siri's - you have any more info on them? I think any similarities between the former Cala on Leland and any Siri's or Purity location is purely coincidental, alas. I don't really h...

Well done. Interesting stuff. FYI, the Cala on South Van Ness in SF (mentioned in the description of the Visitacion Valley store) was not originally a Cala. It began as a Siri's Market and was later a Purity. The former Purity on Third Street (now a church) was also a Siri's to begin with, as was (...

My new Peninsula Stores site is now up

After spending several days this month on supermarket touring, I finally have enough photos milling around the Peninsula for a webpage. Thoughts appreciated as always :)

Here's one from Corpus Christi, but the photo dates back to 1983:

Safeway's "divested" markets from 1986
In the KKR buyout, Safeway ended up leaving several markets (i.e. Dallas, Kansas City) to focus on its strong spots (Northern California, Washington DC metro, etc.) and avoid some union troubles. I hadn't seen very many photos from those divested regions until I came across this one, from Wichita, K...

San Francisco: Interesting article on 30th/Mission Safeway
http://www.sfhac.org/images/Mission_Safeway.gif Some community activists suggested (back when this was published about a year ago) that if Safeway ever expanded the 30th/Mission site (currently holding a classic 1960s Marina design), that they would want housing, etc. similar to Albertsons' setup on...

Did the 2630 Bayshore location ever operate as a supermarket again, or was it immediately purchased by the nearby statue manufacturer? It was a MacFrugal's (now Big Lots) when I moved to SF in the early 1990s. The statue and stone place took over about 2000, as I recall. I remember that Big Lots ha...

Fashion Island, San Mateo/Foster City
When I was younger, I would go to the skating rink once in a while at Fashion Island, but in the several years I went there, I noticed a continuing death of stores (i.e. Whole Earth Access, the KB toy store, etc.) until eventually, by the mid-90s, the site was razed for a big box power center, lacki...

Actually, I'd say that Safeway's location patterns in SF are as much a function of the city's population density as of market share. That makes sense - I was wondering if part of the reason the Clement store closed was simply that the LaPlaya site (not too far away) was seen as more viable for remo...

I just read on the site that 4950 Mission is actually an older site...was that one of the smaller urban stores of the 1940s, or a former pylon building? Mapquesting a buch of Safeway locations turns up an interesting pattern: in general, Safeway's market presence is so strong that they locate stores...
