Re: Canada Safeways

Former Marina Safeway in Vancouver; http://www.marketplaceiga.com/grocery-stores/vancouver-84.aspx When I was up in Vancouver earlier this year, I seem to recall passing by at least one Marina Safeway that was still a Safeway (and looked like a fairly well-preserved Marina from the outside as well....

Interesting photo of the tuning fork sign at the Safeway at W 4th & Vine in Vancouver: http://flickr.com/photos/8119410@N03/3146345430/ From the Live Local birdeye view, this looks to be a marina with an remodeled front: http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=s6b9x54r33cw&...

Re: QFI-Locations in 1966

The March 10, 1966 edition of The Monitor , the official Roman Catholic newspaper in San Francisco, contained an advertisement for the QFI grocery store chain. The store locations listed in the ad were: Grand Central Market, Stonestown Market, Lick Supermarket and QFI-2900 Alemany, QFI-San Mateo, Q...

Re: Former 1940s Safeway Oakland, CA

I'm so glad you like it. It looks a lot like this 1940s Safeway (from Pleasant Family Shopping), so it probably was built from the ground up; http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ei2Ik5quiI0/RuCySySINOI/AAAAAAAAAME/-gnaJKmXlqc/s1600-h/safeway+1945a.jpg Good observation. The photo of 401 A Ave in Lake Oswego: This location opened in February 1965. Does anyone have pictures of this store the way it was back in '65? 3 1/2 years late, but showing the store's annual Christmas tree lighting in a tree that was preserved on the property when the store was built... http://...

Burlingame, CA 1960s Walgreens closing

Just in case anybody's in the area and wants one last look, the Walgreens at 1420 Howard Ave in Burlingame is relocating soon. I was told by an employee that the last day in this building will be Tuesday, April 13. This freestanding store opened around April 1968, and still looks much the same today...

Having rode past the Rite Aid at 32-14 31st St in Queens, NY the other day, I am very sure this was an early 1950s Safeway; http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=3214+31st+St,+astoria,+New+York+&sll=40.758457,-73.928096&sspn=0.00959,0.013797&ie=UTF8&...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

The 2005 movie Because Of Winn-Dixie is about a girl who finds a homeless dog on her way to run an errand at a Winn-Dixie. Towards the middle of the trailer, there are exterior and interior views of an old (1950s?) Winn-Dixie;

Re: Old Safeway in Lodi, California

The Lodi News-Sentinel newspaper is on Google News Archives now. This $450,000, 21,000-square-foot Safeway opened November 2, 1955 on the site of one of Lodi's first schools, the Salem School. It closed October 14, 1995. Photos showing the pylon sign can be seen in these articles; http://news.google...
