Re: Downtown Bellevue marina Safeway finally closed

Cool! Yes all marina Safeway's had unpainted beams originally. The diagonal wood slats in the back were used throughout Seattle-area marina Safeway's (of course they're all painted over now), along with the sandstone brick in the outside front by the entrances. Same architect(s) and prototype, I gue...

Re: Sears Store Locations-San Francisco Bay Area, Calif.-1982

BTW the original Antioch Sears (which opened in the 1950s) was in downtown Antioch and became the Nick Rodriguez Community Center;

Re: Re:

This is the same location as the current Safeway at 1655 S El Camino Real. However, the original store was demolished and the current store built in 1983. I never saw the original store, so I don't know if it was a marina or a gable. While we're on the subject of the former Norfolk st. store, that ...

Re: San Mateo, CA: Wingless Safeway

I just found out from my aunt today that this Safeway had a mosaic mural like the Marina, Millbrae, and, Carmel, and Santa Barbara Safeways. It depicted early California settlers, including Indians, like the others. She said "I don't have a picture though". I said "I'll take your word...

Hollin Hall Shopping Center Mount Vernon, VA

Nice old shopping center featuring a Marina Safeway. Does anybody know what the Rite Aid and variety store were originally?

Re: Northwest Safeways

Never seen a Safeway with this design. Sort of looks like a sideways Penn Fruit/Grand Union, with a very sharp arched roof and protruding wood beams. Too bad the building is long gone. Scroll left on the ad to see a photo of the Farmdale Plaza store, once located in Springfield, neighboring city to ...

Re: Historic Department Stores Blog

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. The department store blog has a different curator profile than the Mall Hall of Fame blog. I think that style might be characteristic of Blogspot.com and used in other blogs hosted by that server, like http://pleasantfamilyshopping.blogspot.com/ . Thanks for the o...

Re: PW Markets Closing all stores

Interesting to hear the history about the Fremont site. I know the strip center you are talking about, with Smart & Final and the Urgent Care clinic. I could tell it used to be a supermarket but couldn't tell just what. I was told by long-time locals that the Alpha-Beta was a different, now-dem...
