National Association of Food Chains-1957-Jim Dandy, etc.

I have found a reference to a "National Association of Food Chains" circa 1957. If anyone finds their newsletters or reports (assuming that any ever were produced), I'm sure that they contain a "gold mine" of information. I learned about the "NAFC" from a reference to a...

Re: QFI-Locations in 1966

The March 10, 1966 edition of The Monitor , the official Roman Catholic newspaper in San Francisco, contained an advertisement for the QFI grocery store chain. The store locations listed in the ad were: Grand Central Market, Stonestown Market, Lick Supermarket and QFI-2900 Alemany, QFI-San Mateo, QF...

Former Supermarket in Pinole-San Pablo Ave. & Tara Hills Dr.

I think that there is a former supermarket building at the southwesterly corner of San Pablo Avenue and Tara Hills Drive in the Pinole area of Contra Costa County. Perhaps it is a former gable Safeway?

Re: Former 1940s Safeway Oakland, CA

This is a great find. Does anyone know if this building was constructed for Safeway? If so, there must be duplicates that survive around California. In Livermore, Safeway opened a store in 1937 at 1st and J streets. I think (but do not know) that the building was constructed to house the Safeway sto...

Re: Cala Foods-Nob Hill, San Francisco

The San Francisco Chronicle featured the Cala supermarket on Nob Hill in San Francisco in John King's weekly historic architecture column on May 30, 2010. Re: Richmond/El Cerrito (California) area sights

See my "Photostream" on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50610655@N02/

I have placed photos there of the abandoned Lucky/Albertson's supermarket, the nearby 1960s Hacienda Restaurant and the soon-to-be-closed Safeway at San Pablo Ave. and MacDonald Ave. in Richmond, Calif.

Re: Richmond/El Cerrito (California) area sights

I visited the exterior of the former Lucky store near the southeasterly corner of MacDonald and San Pablo in Richmond (just across the city limits from El Cerrito) on May 23, 2010. The "label scar" from the Lucky sign is fading away. A Safeway store still "faces" the old Lucky ac...

Second Bar Code on Coupons

Has anyone else noticed that coupons (e.g., coupons clipped out of the Sunday newspaper) now have two bar codes on them? For at least twenty years (I guess), coupons have included Universal Price Codes. Now they have a second bar code, one that is apparently called a "GS1 DataBar." Does an...

Re: 1959 Chain Store Age piece on Marina Safeway

The San Francisco Chronicle 's "Wayback Machine" of November 30, 2008 had an item from December 5, 1958 about the San Francisco Planning Commission's unanimous approval of "[t]he hotly disputed plans for a Safeway supermarket at Gashouse Cove (now the Marina)." Apparently the &qu...

San Francisco-Lucky Stores-1964-Civil Rights Protests

In 1963-64, civil rights activists targeted many San Francisco businesses to advocate increased hiring members of racial minority groups, especially Blacks/African-Americans. A Cadillac dealership was taken over. The Sheraton-Palace Hotel, Bank of America branches and Mel's Drive-In restaurants also...

Russell's Supermarket Chain-Northern California-1960s

There was a supermarket chain named "Russell's" that operated in the San Francisco Bay Area (and perhaps beyond) in the 1960s. The Daily Review (Hayward, Calif.) reported on December 13, 1962 that a new "Russell's" store was celebrating its grand opening in the shopping center at...

Re: former safeways in the S.F. bay area that became drug stores

Another "Marina Safeway" building has literally bitten the dust. The former Safeway store on E. 18th Street in Oakland, Calif. between Lake Merritt and Park Blvd. had been a Walgreen's drug store, as mentioned above. When I drove by on January 31, 2010, the former Safeway building was gone...

Lucky-Livermore, Calif.-2930 Pacific Avenue-1980 Earthquake

In time for the 30th anniversary of the 5.5 earthquake that struck Livermore, Calif. (eastern Alameda County), I have found a color photograph of the exterior of what appears to be the Lucky supermarket at 2930 Pacific Avenue.
