The Lucky/Sav-On look was a lot better than Albertsons current remodel decor. That isn't exactly saying much, either.
We can't complain too much until they remodel downtown Petaluma.

Longs is California based. They have grown mainly organically. Strongholds are NorCal and Hawaii. Presence in other markets including NV, CO, WA, and OR is poor. They exited Arizona and Alaska in the 90's. Later in the 90's, they expanded into Oregon and Washington by purchasing the Drug Emporium fr...

Did any other chain grocer ever operate in this town? There appear to be a few independents that could have been something else in a past life. The Save Mart appears to have been there for quite a while... store 17.

I was disappointed to find the Brentwood former Lucky remodeled into the current ABS scheme when I was there last summer. They at least kept the old Sav-On sign out by the street (large, took up half of the sign with Albertsons squeezed into the other half). Elk Grove has the interior you describe w...

Mega operated in Las Vegas, too. They had a store in El Cajon across from the Longs on Jamacha Road. Looked like a former of some conventional, but I couldn't figure out what. Don't quote me, but I think Mega was owned by Fleming. Not sure what came of the ones in Las Vegas. Price Rite maybe. Food 4...

The five remaining Super K's out west sell Springfield food items (with a few American Fare items thrown in which usually cost more than the Springfield brand next to them) and also some Springfield/Special Valu non food items like bleach, paper towels, detergent, etc. They used to have Bonnie Hubba...

Did the interior of this place look the same in person as it does on these pictures? I enlarged the pictures of the meat room. Mistake.

Phar Mor operated in Reno, NV until about 1993. They moved into a former Pak N Save which had opened around 1987 and was gone by 1989. I think we had Phar Mor for about 3 years. I don't know if any of them actually ever opened in California, but I know some were very very close when the chain starte...

If you want to see a real nicely preserved former Lucky complete with the old interior, visit the one in Carmichael at Manzanita and Fair Oaks. I have some friends with family who live near that store and they all say what a nice new store Albertsons put up there. Imagine their surprise (or horrific...

Elko, NV Former Safeway. Idaho at D
I am guessing this was closed by the mid 1980's. Safeway built a new store up on Mountain City Highway (currently Builder's Mart) sometime in the 1986 period. This store was part of the Salt Lake City division, so that took care of that store. It ended up as various things throughout the 1990's such...

Unfortunate, but not all that surprising to hear about Marinwood. No excuse for these stores not being able to perform. I really wonder about the small location in Tiburon that is close to the highway; it has an older interior. Most of the other Marin County Bell Markets had the same interior decor ...

To add to this post, the Monte Mart in Porterville will be closing within the next week or so, or has already closed. Does anyone have pictures?

Indio Super Saver closing 02/02/06
Albertsons is closing the Indio Super Saver on 02/02/06. This was the last of the former ASC Super Saver Stores left in SoCal. There is still one left up in Woodland (NorCal). Indio is the last place in SoCal to have the old Acme-style Super Saver logo. The other ones have a modified ABS version wit...
