It's at 2306 Almeden Road at Curtner, just off Almeden Expressway. It didn't have the original color scheme, but did have the original walls and wall signage, just painted a more neutral color. I'd guess it opened about 1968. Interestingly, the exterior had been remodeled recently, as part of a reno...

I went by a former Colonial location in Richmond today (from 1965, perhaps earlier) that has a canopy exactly the same as your Winn-Dixie ("wavy"). I think it's a Colonial for sure. I tend to agree on this one; it's almost certainly a Colonial. There's also one with that canopy in Camden ...

Great pictures! I'm also curious about the windmill. Was that a Von's thing? Actually, the windmill was most likely related to Van de Kamps, as stated above. It may have been an ad, but a more likely guess is that there was a Van de Kamps restaurant/bakery adjacent. Most of them had windmill motifs...

Re: What store was this? Looks like old Safeway

Anybody know what this store is / was? This is a recent magazine ad for the Kia Sedona. I scanned it and cropped to show only the photo. My guess is that this is a former Safeway. Any guesses as to location, most recent operation, etc? No location guesses, but it's definitely a former Safeway. And ...

Astor and Superbrand come to mind. And wasn't there a Crackin' Good or Crackin' Fresh brand for crackers and cookies?

jamcool wrote:Remember those "bell" sounds you heard over the speakers at dept. stores in the old days? What were they for?
I think they were to page departments by number. For example, department 213 would be ding-ding pause ding pause ding-ding-ding.

As I remember, it dates from the mid 1970s. The stores in my hometown haad time to adopt the new logo before being sold, which happened in the late 1970s.

Re: Giant Genie

Was the Giant Genie chain bought by a pharmacy (which seems strange. Why not just start your own pharmacy with a more pharmacy sounding name?). When did the location on South Blvd. open up? Which location is shown in the article on Charlotte chains? The Giant Genie chain was a small family-owned ch...

How about an A&P into a television station? WBOY, Channel 12, Clarksburg, WV: Y'know, I've seen another store converted into either a TV or radio station somewhere, and I can't remember the specifics now. Of course, SF has an old Safeway at Turk and Fillmore that's been converted into a police ...

Great photos. Thanks.

I pushed this thread over to "regions and cities" because all the locations were already identified in the initial post, so their origins weren't really in question :)

Sacramento: Stop-n-Shop

I've seen this postcard on eBay several times and I've often wondered where this store was. Anyone have any ideas? I can't figure out what the old building behind it is, or was, but its age would tend to place it in the downtown/midtown area, I should think. It kind of looks like a hospital. The onl...

Doesn't look quite that big to me. I'm guessing maybe 25K, tops. Note that the wing is actually a dry cleaner's store and not part of the Food Fair.

It's a quite beautiful store, though. Nice photo too.

In Atlanta, there is a store that was once called the "Disco Kroger" because of it's location in the center of Atlanta's nightlife at the time. So I wonder if they had a disco ball. Or what about the former Big Star, later A&P that was next door? I think it was more a reference to tha...

Columbus OH: Indianola Avenue

Based on the shape of the sign, I'd guess an A&P that was still there following the introduction of the new logo in the 1970s, but I'm definitely not sure, and I don't even know when A&P left Columbus. The old discount/department store in the background (now a thrift store) is kind of intere...
