Re: Unremodeled Tom Thumb Stores in Dallas
I was in the Tom Thumb located at 10455 N Central Expressway last month. This store is pretty small....and has not been remodeled into a Lifestyle format. Not sure quite how long the store has been there.....but I remember going there back in the early 1970's when it was Tom Thumb-Page Drug.

There also was a Pantry Pride in JMFields plaza in Augusta also....it lasted until the very early 1980's. It had the open entrance between JM Fields and Pantry Pride....guess that was pretty common.

I didn't realize that the company had changed their name to Meadowdale Foods.....Meadowdale was their second tier private label brand....with Camelot being the first quality private label....they also had other private labels.....Squire was the brand for their household/cleaning products and Mel-O-C...

Re: The Vintage Supermarket (And Drugstore) "Smell"
Funny that someone should mention store "smells".....this is a subject that I have mentioned to several people thru the years...and suprisingly, many of them knew what I was talking about. Having grown up in Oklahoma.....I visited many Safeway stores ....since Safeway was the main grocery ...

Re: Texas: Safeway locations in ex-Weingarten's stores?
The above mentioned Tom Thumb at 10445 N Central Expressway was never a Safeway....to the best of my knowledge......I have visited that store several times.....going back to the mid 1970's.....it was a Tom Thumb/Page as far back as then....I was there a year or so ago....most Tom Thumb stores in the...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise
I have several collections of things....one group of things I like to collect is stuff from the laundry/cleaning aisle in the supermarket....specifically items from the 50's, 60's and 70's. There are probably 350 items in my collection.....here are a few items from this category that aren't around a...

Target Supermarkets....Not Super Target
Our first Target stores in Oklahoma City opened in approximately 1972. There were four locations....all of the were built in the late 1960's as Arlans Stores.....Arlans had adjoining grocery stores called Arlans Foods......same concept at KMart and KMart Foods......after Arlans locations closed, and...

Re: Anyone know about the Consumers chain?
Maybe I can fill in a little bit......these stores started in the 1940's or early 1950's, I think....their original name was Consumers Warehouse Markets....it's true they were mostly in Southwest Missouri and a couple of stores in NE Oklahoma. They were traditionally located next to Wal Mart for the...

Re: Possible former Kroger? 3222 S. Main Joplin, MO
I have visited this store before.....I didn't get the "Kroger" feeling......there was a Consumers Market in this neighborhood.....I would lean more to that...Consumers Markets was a local chain of several stores based in Springfield, MO.

Re: Mystery stores - 2609 E. 7th & 1701 S. Main, Joplin MO
The store on S. Main looks like an older Safeway to me.....I was in there a few years back when it was a thrift store......and it had some Safeway remnants either on the wall graphics or doors or something.....it looks a lot like another former Safeway in Hutchinson, KS.

Re: Dillon's @ 1402 E. 20th, Joplin MO
I'm reasonably sure that this was always a Dillons.....I did a two day trip last fall to about 20 Dillons locations in towns across Kansas.....this exterior is very similar to several other stores I saw. Most of the stores have the same interior remodeling package as this too......I am working on ge...

This was definately a Safeway. I was in this store in the late 70's--early 80's.....before it became an IGA.

My guess is Colonial also....the metal front of the building and the yellow/beige/tan brick on the building's corner looks like other Colonial's I have seen thru the years.

Re: Safeway Store Brands
I was in a flea market last weekend in Muskogee, OK.....there were four quart-size glass Cragmont bottles....but no mention of Safeway. Embossed on the necks of the bottles was "Marlboro" and the labels were Cragmont brand.....made by Marlboro Beverage Company in California. Later versions...
