Re: NEW: Shreveport, 1925-2020

This is great work. Shreveport has indeed over the years had some interesting grocery history, which includes several of the big companies like A&P, Albertsons (and Skaggs), Kroger (through acquisitions), Safeway and Weingarten, to name a few. I grew up just over the line in Texas, so I have a l...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

What about the Lawrence, NC location which I just found https://books.google.com/books?id=jlUyAAAAIBAJ&pg=PA2&dq=Kroger+Family+Center&article_id=5551,2196007&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjkocDG-5GBAxXQF1kFHZZRAT84ChDoAXoECAQQAg#v=onepage&q=Kroger%20Family%20Center&f=false h...

Has anyone mentioned the store in Mount Airy (NC) yet? https://books.google.com/books?id=IXM_AAAAIBAJ&pg=PA31&dq=Kroger+Family+Center&article_id=7103,5637782&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi5s9-S-5GBAxWUEFkFHeFxD7UQ6AF6BAgFEAI#v=onepage&q=Kroger%20Family%20Center&f=false http...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Since you seem not to believe anything I show you, here's the indisputable evidence I gave you there too: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=861&dat=19791120&id=mplHAAAAIBAJ&sjid=R38MAAAAIBAJ&pg=5642,5251829 It's an ad from The Victoria (Texas) Advocate. Look in column three, thi...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

The Kroger FC location in College Station opened with Family Center signage but only had the regular grocery / food and drug mix. (on my list I have it under "never opened" since it never actually opened as a family center despite its signage) I could be wrong but I think that location wa...

BatteryMill wrote: 07 Jul 2023 13:30 There are still a few missing from AR, NC and some other states, though good work. Don't forget to credit the Kroger store list and South Texas Retail for our findings.
Also missing - the short lived greenhouse Family Center in Opelousas, LA. It ran from 1980-1982.

retail_person_247 wrote: 07 Jul 2023 12:51 I was just notified today about that store, the address is incorrect.

There was never a Kroger at 360 Clarksville, the actual family center at 3052 is still operating as a Kroger location.
From the Kroger website:

It's not at 3052.

Re: Kroger Family Centers

You have Paris listed three times. Only one is correct: Kroger Family Center 1310 Clarksville St Paris TX 75460 One is a direct duplicate, and the other (3052 Clarksville) was not Kroger. Kroger didn't run the Family Centers long enough to relocate any stores. Kroger still operates in the old Family...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Newspaper archives suggest that the Kroger opened about 1972, which was after the Family Center experiment more or less ended (I think) and was a couple of years before the first superstores. The first superstore opened in 1972 and they quickly built a lot of them. That was shortly after they exite...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

The first superstore opened in 1972 and they quickly built a lot of them. That was shortly after they exited the Twin Cities and Chicago and signaled that they were willing to leave markets. They knew by then that they needed to change their approach and had experimented with larger super markets d...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Newspaper archives suggest that the Kroger opened about 1972, which was after the Family Center experiment more or less ended (I think) and was a couple of years before the first superstores. 1972-ish, depending on the division. Houston (Kroger Texas) tried to nurse it into the 80s, even opening th...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Not to mention, per NACDS and newspaper ads from May 1972, there was a SupeRx next door. So that arrangement explains why it may be larger than a standard Kroger of the time. If you look closely at the Google Maps link, it shows a definite division between the Kroger and the SuperX/CVS that was onc...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

By chance could this building possibly be another former Kroger FC? https://www.facebook.com/groups/AbandonedInVirginia/permalink/1436521027181700/ The person who posted this said that it was last Big Lots. A lot of Kroger FC's became Danner's 3D Discount stores, and a lot of former 3D locations we...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

I'd wager it as opening a little earlier; Historic Aerials shows the center up in 1969, and a 1967 listing of nearly every Kroger location mentions a Kroger already existing in Opelousas at the time. Sorry; in doing a little digging, this store opened April 1966. Would like to see these sources. Up...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

What was the location of the original Opelousas store, and what was its history? The original Opelousas location was on US190 at the western edge of town where 190 splits into one way Vine and Landry streets. It shared parking with a Howard Brothers store which outlived it. I'm not sure if they hel...
