Re: NEW: Portland (Oregon) 1932-1987
After reading this I was curious about Tradewell, a chain I remember when I lived in Seattle as a child. I found this interesting article which barely mentions Tradewell but has the interesting history of a chain called 'Groceteria' of all things. Not sure if this has already been posted on this mes...

Re: American Stores Company operated restaurants in the 1980's
I'm pretty sure, but not 100% certain, that the restaurants were Alphy's as mentioned in the first post of this thread.
I think they were still open into the 1980's.

Re: Safeway 1986 & Unsettling Times Eastern Division
This article from March 5th 1987 has some information about this. "Bradford said Safeway has no plans to sell six divisions: Southern California, Northern California, Phoenix, Seattle, Portland, Ore. and Washington, D.C. But the remaining eight divisions--Dallas, Houston, El Paso, Denver, Kansa...

Re: Sears/Safeway rumor from 2006
The timing would make sense for an opportunistic takeover. By 2006 it was obvious the acquisitions of Randall's/Tom Thumb, Dominick's and Genuardi's was a bust and was having an impact on their share price. Perfect time for someone like Eddie Lambert to try and profit from the situation.

Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992
Hmmm... Food Barn Sues Safeway Over Sale of Kansas City Stores Well, that at least pinpoints the year of Safeway's KC departure to 1988...the same year as most of Safeway's other post-KKR divestments. No word on how they came to use the name. Food Barn lasted to 1994. Safeway had both Food Barn and...

The Lost And Forgotten Supermarkets Of LA's Past
I found an interesting article posted on the LAist website that has some good photos about the history of supermarkets in SoCal that no longer exist. Hopefully it will be of interest to people on this site: https://laist.com/2019/07/05/las_lost_supermarkets_grocery_stores_of_the_past.php They debunk...

Re: NEW: Spokane WA, 1925-1960
For 1304 N Liberty Lake Rd you put Albertsons? for 2010 and Safeway? for 2015. This photo definitely indicates the store was converted to a Safeway The question marks were there because the location was not listed in the 2010 and 2015 city directories, so it was clear that it HAD been converted, bu...

Spokane is now updated through 2015, which proved much more interesting than I expected: https://www.groceteria.com/place/us-washington/spokane/ For 1304 N Liberty Lake Rd you put Albertsons? for 2010 and Safeway? for 2015. Re: Texas Updates
This was interesting. 1986 Dallas gives about as good a snapshot as you can get into Safeway's operation near the end of their presence there. They announced the decision to close the Dallas Division on April 24th 1987. This Tom Thumb was particularly interesting. Does anyone know the story of it? h...

Re: SSL upgrade
It's also disturbing that we're heading towards a web where the authority for validating a website is placed not with the site author, not with the visitor, but in the hands of anonymous entities like "DigiCert Inc." I know nothing about. What those companies do is verify the owner of sit...

Re: NEW: Phoenix, 1925-1960
I would guess that 3435 W Buckeye Rd, Phoenix AZ was probably a regional distribution center. In 1980 Arden operated approximately 102 stores of which 43 were in Arizona (IIRC). They had closed their central distribution center and corporate office complex on Slauson Ave. in Commerce around this sam...

Was it common for Lucky to have oval signs? When I first saw this I thought it must have been an Alpha Beta but that doesn't seem to be the case: https://www.google.com/maps/place/1000+Petaluma+Blvd+N,+Petaluma,+CA+94952/@38.2454717,-122.6448306,3a,75y,31.08h,95.67t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXVmN-QZrXCj7p...

Is this the Alpha Beta? It's also a good example of the moderne architectural style:

Mayfair Market Palm Springs
I was looking at the recent thread about Safeway in Palm Springs and tried to research a little about it, but something else came up that I thought was interesting. A 1960 build Mayfair Market that at 30,000 sq ft. was the largest supermarket in the Coachella Valley at the time. https://digital.lib....

Re: Palm Springs Safeway Update
Interesting photos. I assumed that the entrance had always been on Highway 111 (as it was with Staples IIRC).
