Interesting, though what's confounding is how some of the Big Chain cafeterias were opened adjacent to Big Chain supermarkets after the Kroger acquisition.wnetmacman wrote: ↑03 Oct 2023 16:22 Kroger never bought the cafeterias. They continued as Big Chain for a while, then were bought by Brookshire's, who ran them until 1990-1991.

Were these ever spun off from Kroger?wnetmacman wrote: ↑03 Oct 2023 15:08 Here's a location list for Big Chain Cafeterias for 1961. This would be before Shreve City, so I would guess that there were at least 6 cafeterias.

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The Dillons is a former Family Center. If you look closely at the Street View, you can see the aggregate tilt walls under the paint. Fun fact, the Lawrence Kroger survived beyond Kroger's exit from Kansas City in 1976, the Dillons buyout in 1982, and even their vast downsizing of St. Louis operatio...

Re: NEW: Winchester and Harrisonburg VA
I would guess the ABC application would mean it opened in 2008. It was vacant by 2011, which is earlier than the other Food Lion closures in the area. I've sourced the 2008 info per a https://newspaperarchive.com/winchester-star-jun-26-2008-p-10/|Winchester Star article. Pharmacy databases list Foo...

Re: NEW: Winchester and Harrisonburg VA
Kroger #341 (opened 1995) and Food Lion #1506 (as of 2008) operated at 2047 S Pleasant Valley Rd in Winchester. Numbers are per the VA ABC license search. On a side note I remember hearing somewhere about Kroger signing a 20-year clause not to operate stores in a nearby radius (such as in Martinsbur...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
There are still a few missing from AR, NC and some other states, though good work. Don't forget to credit the Kroger store list and South Texas Retail for our findings. Also missing - the short lived greenhouse Family Center in Opelousas, LA. It ran from 1980-1982.kropel.jpg Did this location inclu...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
Newspaper archives suggest that the Kroger opened about 1972, which was after the Family Center experiment more or less ended (I think) and was a couple of years before the first superstores. The first superstore opened in 1972 and they quickly built a lot of them. That was shortly after they exite...

Now from what I can gather City Supers seems to have been based out of Colorado Springs and supplied by SuperValu.

Newspaper archives suggest that the Kroger opened about 1972, which was after the Family Center experiment more or less ended (I think) and was a couple of years before the first superstores. 1972-ish, depending on the division. Houston (Kroger Texas) tried to nurse it into the 80s, even opening th...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
Rather a late pre-Superstore, has a lot of the Family Center DNA despite not quite being one. Agreed. Also the other large building on the site, which was probably some flavor of discount department store, argues against its being a Family Center as well. But yeah, it definitely has the FC design t...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
By chance could this building possibly be another former Kroger FC? https://www.facebook.com/groups/AbandonedInVirginia/permalink/1436521027181700/ The person who posted this said that it was last Big Lots. A lot of Kroger FC's became Danner's 3D Discount stores, and a lot of former 3D locations we...

Re: Colorado Soupers and City Supers
Adding on to this there was another "Circle Soopers" chain acquired by City Market in the mid-1980s... what could this mean? Was naming your grocery stores "Supers" a part of Colorado culture or something? :P

Re: NEW: Springfield IL, 1925-2023
Thank you for the post. What I have seen is a Kroger on 155 N Lincoln as of 1931 (store #3037) in another directory, but there are none at that address, though there are two close by (one at a corner with Lincoln/Governor) as of 1930-1937. Any leads on that?

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA
The original Opelousas location was on US190 at the western edge of town where 190 splits into one way Vine and Landry streets. It shared parking with a Howard Brothers store which outlived it. I'm not sure if they held the lease that was lost in 1978. The store opened in the early 1970s. I'd wager...
