The policy is that when you post a picture that's that good, you have to identify it as a "really cool picture".

OK, I'm kidding. Welcome aboard.

Strangely enough, that seems to have been a fairly common term in California way back when. In fact, there's still a fairly well-known one in San Francisco.

In Charlotte, there's a charter school using an old Kmart building.

Williamson Road, Roanoke VA

Any thoughts on this one? Based on its size, it might very well have been a drug store rather than a supermarket, but I just thought I'd ask if anyone positively recognized the prototype.

All I know is Brendles was a catalog showroom that closed up in 1996 Yeah, that's pretty much it. They were based in Elkin NC, and had stores in the Triad area, and later Charlotte and Myrtle Beach. They may have been in other parts of the Carolinas and Virginia as well. Their merchandise lines wer...

1300 Bush St, San Francisco >> Rite-Aid
1330 Castro St, San Francisco >> Walgreens
7100 Bancroft Av, Oakland >> Rite-Aid (this may have been a Super S)
3232 Foothill Blvd, Oakland >> Walgreens

I'll try to think of some others.

Is this one still here? I can't remember the name of the street, but it was on one of the former US 99 routes leading south out of Portland.

For those who care, I've posted the 1980s portion of the Charlotte history section. It was probably the most interesting and complicated one of the bunch, and includes the 1988 Kroger/Bi-Lo swap, the rise and fall of 3 Guys, and more: http://www.groceteria.com/charlotte/1980.html Now that I've final...

No. Cary Court Park & Shop is the name of a shopping center, not a store. Park & Shop (and variations like Park-n-Shop) is quite possibly the most common name ever used for supermarket chains in the US. There have been dozens of small (and some large) chains, and probably hundreds of indivi...

Woolco was common all over the country, and often was connected with the construction of small, second-tier enclosed malls. Two such mallls were constructed in Charlotte NC and another location opened in an existing center, as has already been documented on this site. Woolwoth gave up on the Woolco ...

Gold Circle and Ralphs were both owned by Federated Department Stores in the early 1980s, so it would make sense for the two chains to have opened stores in tandem. When Campeau Corporation purchased Federated in about 1988, some or all of the Gold Circle stores were sold off. The ones in the south ...

It's at 2306 Almeden Road at Curtner, just off Almeden Expressway. It didn't have the original color scheme, but did have the original walls and wall signage, just painted a more neutral color. I'd guess it opened about 1968. Interestingly, the exterior had been remodeled recently, as part of a reno...
