Re: Palm Springs Safeway ??
I don't know what year it closed. The store in Palm Desert was quite a bit closer though, I think. It probably had more of an impact on the store in question closing. Does anyone know what years Palm Desert and Palm Springs (Rimrock) opened? Based on architecture I would assume Palm Desert opened in...

Interesting article. It seems strange that they made their biggest expansion right before they sold out.

Re: Big Bear Chain-San Diego Area-1959
This is a very interesting article about the day in the life of a Big Bear store manager written in December 1992. They first announced they were selling all their stores less than a year later in October 1993. https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/1992/dec/10/cover-big-bear-market/ They interviewed t...

Re: Food Basket (Division of Lucky Stores)-San Diego Area-1959
I had heard back in the day that Lucky chose the Food Basket name because there was already a Lucky grocery store in the county (I think it was in Chula Vista or National City) but as mentioned in this thread and the other older one about Food Basket they actually acquired that chain in the 1950's. ...

Re: NEW: Phoenix, 1925-1960
Thanks for doing this one. I was especially curious about the original El Rancho locations which evidently represented Mayfair Markets entry into Arizona. The design of the shopping center at 3217 E Camelback Rd. is a good example of a shopping center design they also used in some Las Vegas location...

Re: Safeway Grand Opening-Photo-Unknown Date & Location
The license plates on the cars are yellow. Arizona had yellow license plates at that time. The houses have swamp coolers on the roofs, which are indicative of a desert-like climate (they only work in low humidity). The billboard in the parking lot says Eller on it. According to Wikipedia someone nam...

Re: Safeway's original SoCal division
Regarding the SoCal SAFEWAY division headquarters, they were located in Downey at 12200 Bellflower Blvd, just due North from Imperial Hwy. The building is still there, intact, now occupied by a Kaiser Permanente health care facility. Driving into the lot and around the building, it still maintains ...

Safeway used to have a cheese processing plant in Wisconsin. I don't know what city it was in, however.

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)
Excellent catch! There was an Alpha Beta at 900 W. Alameda in Burbank per my 1973 list , so I bet that's it! Current street view: https://goo.gl/maps/HCorXXAjCpP2 I think you are right. That has to be it. The way the entrances are set up remain the same even though the building's appearance has bee...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)
At 17:50 in the video when someone walks outside the door you can see an address of '900' on the window above the door. Don't know if that helps. Also as they walk to the right there is a Ho Ho Liquors (but they could have changed the name for the show).
