Does anyone know who owns the name Seven-Eleven? Southland Corp, the master franchiser went bankrupt after the chain over expanded in the 70s or 80s. I think Southland came to be owned by a Far Eastern conglomerate. From http://www.7-eleven.com : On November 9, 2005, Seven-Eleven Japan Co., Ltd., a...

British Columbia and Alberta are the only provinces Safeway Canada operates in. Safeway, other than the Baltimore/Washington region, in which they inherited Sanitary Stores in the 1920's, is a West Coast chain. A&P still operates predominantly in Eastern Canada, as does IGA and Loblaw's, a Cana...

Re: The New Farmer Jack

I don't know how A&P runs Superfresh or Farmer Jack's in other places. In Richmond, anyway, the Farmer Jack's stores were anything but super stores or high-end, and Superfresh was even less so - definitely not so super and not so fresh. Granted, A&P's stores today (in the markets where they...

Re: On no

Is that the former car dealership? The one that doesn't havea parking lot? Yup. It does have a small lot, though. It is hard even to find an Albertsons in San Francisco and areas north. Actually, Alberstons has had a bit of a renaissance in SF proper; there are four stores there now, three of which...

That was a very interesting store, a former Lucky. The interior remodel was a little different from the standard Lucky package of the 1990s; I think they may have remodeled it as a prototype test for stores which would serve a more ethinic clientele. It was more colorful, with more wall graphics, et...

It's possible, but I'm told the new Piggly Wiggly on Meeting Street replaced a fairly old one on the same site, which leads me to think this one was probably something else...

Several stores in the Bay Area were remodeled. Some that come to mind are Marina Village in Alameda, Lakeshore in Oakland, Bayfair in San Leandro, and El Camino in San Bruno. I think there were others too (maybe College Avenue in Oakland) but I can't remember for sure. Also, a few were torn down and...

The original Food Lion #1 was torn down several years ago. It was in the shopping center that used to be a few hundred feet from I-85 off US 52 in Salisbury NC.

I've also heard rumors that Publix #1 is still standing but now belongs to someone else.

Phar-Mor. The Youngstown, OH based drug superstore chain that folded a few years back? In California? They never got out of the Midwest, that I'm aware of. Interesting store we should talk about sometime in the non-grocery section, I know a good bit about them...they were big in a lot of this area....

THE RULES: Please read before posting!

Welcome to the Groceteria.com Message Board. The Basics: The first thing you should know is that this is not a general interest supermarket message board. It is a somewhat tightly-moderated board on the subject of supermarket history. Posts about current operations are generally off-topic and subjec...

Per DC Grocery, there was also one in Washington at 1110 F St. NW. Picture is lifted from that (excellent) site.

It really looks like an auto dealership to me. The service areas in a lot of old dealerships are in separate buildings, and the lack of parking doesn't necessarily rule out a car dealership. They've changed as much as grocery stores over the years! I agree, but this one literally barely had enough ...

Yup, it's an odd one. I'd almost guess that it had maybe been a car dealership rather than a supremarket, but there's no evidence of service bays and it's not surrounded by much of a parking lot... I was hoping you'd tell me it was a Food Fair :) I know there was at least a JM Fields in Charleston, ...
