Re: NEW: Vancouver WA, 1928-2000
You can add Waremart to your list, as Vancouver was one of their early outposts. In December 1971, they built a store at 7110 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd. (Unusual in that most of their other stores back then were not new construction.) Four months later it was destroyed in the deadliest tornado in West ...

Re: Bellevue, WA - Main Street Place
The Office Depot and Petsmart building was originally a P-X Sooper Market. It was not only a grocery but had a drug store and outdoor nursery as well. I can't pin down the exact date it was built, but it was around 1962. Mayfair Markets bought out P-X in 1964. Here's what it looked like as a Mayfair...

Re: 1971 Film of Supermarket Interior
It's a Roger Wilco market, which was a small chain in Marin and Sonoma counties. It shouldn't be too hard to narrow down the specific location.

Re: I made a list of A&P locations... And I need your help with it
I've added all the Seattle-area locations (in addition to the Edmonds Centennial that was already listed). A&P entered the market in 1931 with the first store on Capitol Hill. They were limited to King County (and a one-off store in Bremerton) until the mid-60s, when they added locations in Taco...

Re: Former grocery store / supermarket? (Twin Falls)
It was a Safeway, built 1957. I'm surprised it wasn't a gable as that was about when they started using that design. I'm not sure what was meant by it "being hidden from the street," as it fronts Filer Avenue along with the rest of the shopping center. There are some articles describing h...

Re: White Front Stores
Grand opening ads for the White Front store only mention the supermarket as part of White Front, so I'm not sure what the actual history was. It could have initially been operated by Safeway under the White Front name, or maybe Safeway took it over and rebranded. I can't find any documentation one ...

Re: Mayfair Markets - Geography and History
I know I am resurrecting a old thread about Mayfair. But I remember Mayfair Markets when I was a child. As stated earlier, they sold their Western Washington operations to Lucky by 1975. I do remember being in Mayfair one last time in 1980 in Newport, Oregon. But according to a earlier post, there ...

Re: Lewis County Mall, Chehalis, WA
I did a little research and found that it opened in 1974 with Sears and Value Giant at the initial anchors. Value Giant was the discount department store division of Castle & Cooke, parent company of the Dole Food Co. Their stores were primarily in Northern California, but there were a couple in...

Re: McDonald's in non-Walmart stores
Fred Meyer once had their own restaurant chain, Eve's Buffet, in stores until around the mid-late 80s. Most of these stores still open have been heavily remodeled and there is no trace of those left. The Kitsap (Bremerton) Fred Meyer opened in 1990 with a '50s themed restaurant called Fred's Diner ...

Re: 72nd St. Goodwill, Tacoma, WA former grocer?
It was built as a Piggly Wiggly in 1977... the Tacoma-Puyallup Piggly Wiggly stores became Hogan's Market around 1990. Hogan's locations were split between QFC and Safeway in 1995, but this store didn't make the cut for either company. The Dollar Tree was originally a Giant T/Thrifty, then went to P...

Re: Old Burien Safeway (Top Hat) 11225 1st Ave South
I checked the Seattle Times database and found that it opened Nov. 30, 1960 and lasted until March 1981. In June of that year, it became an independent store called Ron's Food World.

Wards had a number of catalog stores in the Puget Sound area, but not any full-line locations that I'm aware of.

They were about as common as the Marina stores. The Marina and the gable were Safeway's two standard designs during the '60s.

How many stores did White Front have in the Portland area? I know they opened one at Mall 205 that had the standard exterior seen on the Everett Mall store.
