It's quite possible... I never realized how severe the roof arch was until looking at that bird's eye photo. If I recall correctly, this building doesn't have as much glass in the facade as your average Marina.

To the best of my knowledge, there were/are four Marinas in Tacoma: The aforementioned Highland Hills store at 6201 Sixth Ave. (1966) 2411 N. Proctor St. (1967 -- still in operation with a new facade, Store #3424) 112 112th St. S. (1965 -- now a United Foodservice Cash & Carry; in its final days...

This looks to be the Port Orchard ex-Safeway: http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=Point.rxqdqx4sdrn5_1209%20Bay%20St%2c%20Port%20Orchard%2c%20WA%2098366-5213%2c%20United%20States___ Roof looks somewhat more acute than the usual design, though this may just be due to the additions on the building. Now...

I know the location you're talking about... it amazes me that they built a store on the waterfront like that. I'd have figured that would have been prime land for a more expensive development than a Safeway even in the '60s. Apparently not. Nevertheless, you could call it a waterfront Marina! :-) Sp...

Many of them were former Tradewells that were reformatted. The ones that were newly constructed as Prairie Markets (that I'm familiar with) were built on some real stinker properties... the stores were practically invisible from the main thoroughfare to which they were adjacent. The store in East B...

Wonder if those two stores had the same architect or not... It would be interesting to find out. As part of a strip, it's clear that the Highland Hills raised arch set it off from the boxy Wigwam and drug stores on both sides. Since the Puyallup store stands alone, perhaps they felt it wasn't neces...

Re: Tacoma: Pylon-era Safeway, Pacific and 84th

I can tell you about both. The Tacoma library listings for Safeway addresses shows two different addresses for the site: 208 South 82nd Street, and 8202 Pacific Avenue. (Not sure if there was a pre-pylon building at that corner.) It's ironic, because I just went by 84th and Pacific today and made a ...

Re: Musicland memories

I remember this. A huge draw in malls in the Cd and record days before the music industry died down and everyone started to go to the computer for music. They were independent for some time before joining Sam Goody. I'm not sure where each orginated. I believe Musicland was based in Minnesota and Sa...

Here's a photograph of a 7-Eleven in Tacoma, Wash. dating back to 1969 with what looks to be the current logo: http://search.tpl.lib.wa.us/buildings/bldgdetails.asp?id=BU-13002&vhash=P&i=1 . This building now houses a Montessori school! I'd never seen that old logo like the one in Davis befo...

I was at the library looking through some old issues of Safeway News and saw a cover story (from around '73 or '74, I believe) showing a scanning system they were piloting in a store in Austin, Tex. The checker used a light pen. They also showed an example of the barcode and it wasn't like any I've ...

I remember somebody saying something about a bankruptcy, but I don't know for sure. They seemed to be gone by 1992. One of them (in Bremerton, Wash.) managed to hang on until 2002 -- http://www.kpbj.com/headlines/articles/2002-02-07-HED-06.html . (Scroll down to the end of the article.) This is the...

I think Charles Hathaway and I sighted an active KMart Cafeteria (now just a K Cafe labeled for "Family Dining") in Citrus Heights on Sunday. http://dtcwrt.earlracing.com/stores/ch.htm Is this the original chainwide motif for the booths, etc.? Wow... I've never seen anything like that bef...

When I went to one of the Martinez Safeways on Monday, I saw some Dairy Glen milk, with the labeling identifying its origin as "Lucerne" in "Pleasanton, California." Which is to say, there wasn't a mention of Safeway on the jug at all. Generally though I think Safeway puts its n...

Re: 1967 vintage Gemco (now Target) to close Jan 6

I always thought that Gemco membership was open to anyone who wanted to pay a dollar, but the membership application in the ad restricted it to "home or property owner; reserve or active armed forces; city, state, county, federal employee; defense, aerospace, or utility co. employee, non-profi...
