Benson Safeway Kent Washington

Apologize if this store has been posted before but there are still some discussions had about the epic signage for the old Benson Safeway in Kent, Washington. The Benson Safeway as we all called it was opened as a Marina style in the 1960s, it was instantly a hit with the area and was a high perform...

Re: Sidney, Montana-Safeway store-Marina style-opened Oct. 1963

Jason, what a great find, somewhere in my files I have an old picture of all the Montana stores including pictures of the store managers. For 1963 the Snack Bars were still progressive for the times so to see Sidney received one with their store is interesting for a small town.

Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020

I caught this photo on another thread, it is relevant to topics discussed here, attached is a interesting photo of a new Safeway that opened in Billings Montana June 1981, this is not a small store but still opened with DTS POS and a few spare Sweda's to assist with opening lines (thus we know items...

Re: Billings, MT Old Store Photos

Great pictures and history in the Billings newspaper mentioned above, I can provide some history about Safeway in Montana and POS (Point of Sale) questions Montana stores used to be their own division until they merged with the Spokane division. I can't remember the year that the Spokane division me...

Re: University Washington Safeway

I thought the same thing Super S, before the Albertsons buy out we used to keep and store checkstands all the time, I assume now the desire is to buy new for new stores and renovations going forward. Plus I don't know that Albertsons/Safeway wants to pay a vendor to store used checkstands anymore.

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

Safeway had a lot of the DTS model 300/400, the only store that I saw a model 500 was in Butte Montana, we were getting ready to convert the store to IBM 4680 and I can remember the store manager slamming the cover of a 500 and swearing. I was told at the time that the 500 had the capability to be c...

Re: Kmart and Safeway 1998

I saw another thread about a Sears and Safeway acquisition circa 2006, I never heard a whimper about a possible marriage with Sears. But I think I've been gone from the Red S long enough now to discuss there was indeed a buyout of Kmart being evaluated. Steve Burd was interested in purchasing Kmart...

I forgot that I had this picture of the interior of store 91 from October 1982, the store was still using Sweda Power Penny registers, cigarettes were behind the checker of course

2230 East Sprague Street Safeway Spokane

Its encouraging to see when there is an interest in repurposing a classic old Safeway, in this case a Marina store located at 2230 East Sprague Street in Spokane. The store operated from 1966 to the mid 1980's according to my sources, the store closed as it became unprofitable. The old store housed ...

Selah Safeway

Eastern Washington, small town called Selah outside of Yakima, Safeway opened a 11,000 square foot store in 1980. The front of the store featured a bold awning that was popular for many years and remains today. The interior and departments were simple and nimble, like a number of other Safeways that...

Bellingham and Safeway

Bellingham has had an interesting Grocery journey for much of the 1900s. Bellingham experienced growth from an active port and lumber industry and from the Canadians coming down to load up on less expensive fuel and provisions. In the 1930s Haggen began opening up Grocery stores that attracted a loy...

Lynnwood Safeway (Lake Serene)

Special to the Pacific Northwest is the Safeway 3523 in Lynnwood Washington, which we always referred to as Lake Serene (14826 Hwy 99 N Lynnwood), this 51,000 square foot store opened in 1980 and was quite the exception for the times, this was a large experimental store from opening. This Super Stor...

Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020

Thanks Klkla, of course standards varied division by division, in the 1980s division managers had lots of discretion in how money was spent and what stores received, I am referring to the Pacific Northwest here in this reply about Tacoma. Steve Burd later of course would begin to standardize stores ...
