Re: Northville and Plymouth, MI chain grocery/supermarket locations

Here's a great video link I found: Plymouth Michigan, Vintage 1969 This is 6 minutes of amateur 8mm footage shot in and around Plymouth, with many signs, buildings, and vehicles visible. There's a nice pan over an A&P Centennial (almost surely the one at 1050 Ann Arbor Road, now renovated beyond...

Safeway, Cranbrook, BC, 1981

Recently, some 1981-vintage pictures of a Safeway store in Cranbrook, British Columbia were posted on Paul Niedermayer's Curbside Classic blog: https://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/vintage-snapshots-and-photography/cohort-pick-of-the-day-qotd-what-year-is-it/ These are great photos! The store itself...

Re: Rocky Ford, CO - Safeway

Sounds like an excellent specimen! What is the address (or better yet, a photo or Google Street View link)?

Re: NEW: Rochester MN 1925-2020

It's been a few weeks since this was posted...but Minnesota feels like "my" turf since I almost moved there, and presently live 50 kilometres from it...so let's take a dig and see if there are any worthy artifacts in the Land of the Mayo Clinic to spare! Rochester went through substantial ...

Re: NEW: Louisville KY, 1922 and 1946-2022

Now, for A&P. They lasted till the 1980s here; what physical record did they leave behind? 786 Eastern Pkwy , 3110 Taylor Blvd : Both of these are 1940s stores that were later given a 1960s pseudo-Centennial makeover. 3110 Taylor is still open as Pic-Pac, and still has the capsule-shaped frames ...

Re: NEW: Louisville KY, 1922 and 1946-2022

The timing of this feature was perfect! I've been feeling oddly nostalgic about Kentucky (and southern Ohio) lately, and have a hankering to relive some of the road trips I took through that part of the country 10 years ago. Blame it on winter...and being sequestered in Thunder Bay for the last two ...

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah

Here's a 1987 clipping from the Idaho Press-Tribune that touches on the western Safeway store conversions. The store in the photo is in Nampa, not in Utah, and looks to be a fairly new (early- to mid-1980s) store building.

Re: NEW: St Paul and suburbs (1910/1940 - 2022)

Yowza!

I guess this means that the murky origins of Applebaums have been exhumed at last...along with the whereabouts of National pylons and forgotten '60s Kroger stores. I'll need a lot of time to dive into this one!

Re: Updated location list: Winnipeg through 1975

Thanks for the feedback! Fresh Co. is basically Sobeys' slavish carbon copy of Loblaws' No Frills concept. No Frills has unquestionably been a Good Thing for supermarket preservation (there are numerous '50s-'70s Loblaws stores, including several in Winnipeg, that survive in operation as No Frills d...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

Now, for National. True to form, the chain emerged in Peoria fairly late and fairly scrappily, opening its first stores by 1960...and at least two of them were conversions from other grocers. 3127 N University St was originally a Piggly Wiggly, and the building still bears an interesting loop-shaped...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

Even though they operated in Peoria for only an eyeblink of time, Eisner/Jewel left behind a sizable architectural legacy here. An ex-Jewel at 4103 SW Adams St survives ; though if it once had porcelain enamel cladding, it's now gone. A renovated Jewel at 4425 N Prospect Rd still sells groceries as ...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

A&P had the second-largest footprint of the major chains by store count. Yet in contrast to Kroger, the city has surprisingly little to show for it. 2245 NE Jefferson Ave might be the only freestanding pre-1960s A&P supermarket building that survives in Peoria...and it's been badly renovated...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

Time to do some chain-by-chain deep-diving into the city of corn and Caterpillar...starting with Kroger, the city's market leader: * One of the early 1930-era Kroger locations was located on "John H Gwynn Jr. Ave" (although the street wasn't named that until later on). Our host's twin? * 7...

Re: NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

It's been a month. I think I'll dig in... * Chains were well-established in Peoria by 1925, with both local names (Larkin, Poppen) and national names (A&P, Piggly Wiggly) setting up shop with multiple locations. Without having access to more information, it's probably impossible to know which of...

Re: Beckley, WV chain grocery/supermarket locations

Just thought I'd bump up this thread with a great video link: Driving Thru Beckley WV October 8, 1996 A Kroger store is briefly visible around the 2:50 mark, although it doesn't get a clear shot. But that's just the tip of the iceberg of what's visible here: The driver traverses the city's commercia...
