Target Chula Vista... Formerly...?

I always wondered about the Target store at 1240 Broadway in Chula Vista (along with the Michaels adjacent) The other day I noticed a barreled roof behind the facade... any ideas what this used to be? ...the tilted awning on the Michaels looks familiar from something, but I can't quite place it thou...

Re: Table of operational Kroger stores in West Virginia

This easily could have been a 1950s store. During the 60s, Kroger often used corrugated metal behand its signs and tended toward lighter colored brick. Also, their store building seemed to slow greatly after the very beginning of the 60s. On queue, here's an example fitting your description of a 60...

Re: Trader Joe's Westfield NJ: What was it before?

Trader Joe's rarely uses old supermarket buildings. Lots of them are new construction. I do know two of them next to former A&Ps. Another one was an Eckerd. Looking at Google Street View, I'd have to agree it's a new(er) construction. It may have had another building at some point, but the curr...

Re: Former IHOP locations

Found this while looking for something else in the Google Books Life Magazine archives. It's a list of all IHOP locations in 1967. http://groceteria.com/forboard/ihop-1967.jpg Well, as far as the Michigan locations listed go... Detroit - Still standing, now some type of Lunch Buffet. The roof is no...

Re: Early Kmart closures (PRE-1994)

*25201 Outer Dr. in Melvindale apparently closed in the 1980s; it's not in a 1991 phone book of the area, and a Storetrax listing from 2000 just says it's a "former Kmart" built in 1967. It's now a megachurch. In between the Kmart and megachurch phase, this was a temporary location for th...

Re: Vons stores with old interiors

The Vons "Value" interior is now gone from the Vons in Coronado, CA (a former gable Safeway). I've got an ongoing photoset documenting the remodel... which has produced some endcap signs with the "VONS Giving our best" slogan from the early 2000's... http://www.flickr.com/photos/...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)

The 1973 horror movie "Mesiah of Evil" has some excellent interior and exterior scenes from a Ralphs Supermarket. There is also a WT Grant prominately featured in one scene. Here is a clip... At 3.47 into the clip is a priceless view! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1HsndCVP5w That (almos...

Coco's returns to it's classic logo

Somewhat history related, the Coco's chain of restaurants returns to it's classic logo after roughly a decade of the script-style font:

Coronado Vons: Say goodbye to the old decor!

The Vons in Coronado CA (a former gable Safeway) is undergoing a full lifestyle remodel, losing it's less-than-sightly decor form the late 80's. so far they've realigned the produce section to be in the front corner, instead of along the Orange Ave wall. There's also construction going on on the out...

Re: harlem / foster

I'm going to assume you're referring to the Harlem-Foster shopping center in Chicago. (this topic belongs in another section, btw) are you referring to AM-PM as the convenience store arm of ARCO gas stations, or an AM-PM brand separate from ARCO?

Re: Rays Food: Mt. Shasta, Weed, Etna, Ft. Jones

Here's a shot of the Yreka Ray's I took in October 2007... although the paint certainly isn't original, the elements are classic Safeway. The wall font, clock placement, cooler colors/styles and department locations are consistent with Safeway stores of the era. As for the drop ceiling, I'm guessing...

Re: Possible former Kroger

I found a store near Humble, Texas called Food City that sort of looks like a Kroger Greenhouse. Food City appears to be closed, so the address is a mystery. It sits at FM 1960 and Timber Forest Dr. Here's the street view. I'm inclined to say it's not a Kroger since greenhouses were typically talle...

Re: Serving [insert town] since [insert year]?

They've been on the walls since at least the 80's with the red-grey decor (the oldest decor I've seen so far) further back, I couldn't say, though I'm sure someone on here does...

I look forward to it, I understand the City of Coronado can be real bitchy when it comes to some things, so I can imagine the hell Safeway's architectural teams must have had with this...
