Re: NEW: York PA

351 Loucks was County Market from April 1992 to April 2000. Was bought by Big V which converted it to ShopRite, but then closed in November 2000 when Big V filed for bankruptcy. It didn't last long enough to make it onto the chart, but there was a Safeway at 3140 Carlisle Rd from June 1977 to August...

Re: NEW: Winchester and Harrisonburg VA

Couple notes from the Harrisonburg paper: 2035 E Market (Skyline Village)--the Martin's opened 9/12/2007, on the former site of a Toys R Us. The old Rack & Sack was at the other end of the center where Kohl's is now located. 1001 S High--The Red Front closed 12/24/1987. According to the notice i...

Not sure about Mount Pocono, but the North Towanda A&P closed on 12/10/94, a little after Lehighton.

Re: Former A&P in Plymouth, MA?

This was a Purity Supreme (1988-1995) and Stop & Shop (1995-1998). The Stop & Shop closed when they opened a store at the Myles Standish Plaza a couple miles down the road.

Here's a photo in the Purity Supreme days:

Re: Acme to IGA conversion, Keyser, WV

The Safeway in Keyser was at the current Martin's location. Opened 4/23/1986 and was sold to to Giant-Carlisle about a year later along with the LaVale and Front Royal locations. "Unfortunately not enough people are coming in to the stores at this time" according to the Safeway spokesman i...

It was part of the Philly chain. From the 9/9/57 Hagerstown Morning Herald, in an article about Grand Union's purchase of the local HL Mills chain:

Re: Mystery stores in Terre Haute, IN

There's an item in the Terre Haute paper from 2012 indicating that the Big Lots at 4650 South US 41 was previously a County Market, and also this ad from 1990 (covering an impressive geographic range!) showing that the address housed a Pick 'n Save.

Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992

I feel pretty comfortable that the Grand Union stores in KC were a separate, local chain. It's entirely possible they were connected to the New York chain, but this seems like an odd location for them to choose since they had largely no presence whatsoever in between. A&P most likely entered th...
