Re: Digitized annual reports
Now, for Loblaws! The aspect of the company's history that interests me the most is its protracted withdrawal from the United States. The 1980 report describes the bloodletting that the company underwent 3 years earlier in 1977: Withdrawls from Chicago (140 stores), Milwaukee (24), Davenport (30), ...

Re: What chains have operated simultaneously in both the U.S. and Canada?
Are there any other chains that have done so; not counting companies like Walmart and Costco that aren't focused primarily on groceries? Albertsons almost came to Canada in 1974: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/114939616/albertsons-calgary/ In 2000, Albertsons was looking at buying Metro: https://w...

That would've been sold to Kroger.

Re: NEW: Seattle, 1925-1986
Big expansion. Enjoy! https://www.groceteria.com/place/us-washington/seattle/ Albertsons is spelled wrong in your Seattle data. That mid-50s Albertsons in the Magnolia neighborhood is still in operation, is slated to be torn down for apartments with a Safeway on the ground floor. That's assuming th...

Re: Shop-Rite's discount dept. store division?
Grand Union had Grand Way Stop & Shop owned Bradlees Big Bear had Harts Meijer had Thrifty Acres (and a small concept called "Meijer Square" for a few years) Red Owl had had their Family Centers Copps had discount department stores under their own name (Simply just called Copps Depart...

Re: NEW: Amarillo, 1925-2020
Safeway in Amarillo was in the Oklahoma division, that explains why Homeland had a presence there (Homeland was formed from the Safeway Oklahoma division).

Re: NEW: Medford, Oregon 1931-2020
Looks like Albertsons was a little late to Medford (first store opened between 1970 and 1980).

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....
Just a little late-night musing... Alternate history: In 1986, Lucky Stores spun off it's GEMCO division. As a new company, GEMCO struggled to find its place in the late 80's discount arena. After closing all but their California stores in 1989, GEMCO went on a massive rebranding campaign, focusing...

Aborted Skaggs-Albertsons expansion into Canada
In 1974, Albertsons was looking at land sites in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta for Canadian expansion to build Skaggs-Albertsons combo stores. Those plans were ultimately aborted.

Re: 1970 Albertsons Locations in Portland
As I was viewing the September 16-30, 1970 microfilm, here is a list of all the Albertsons stores in the Portland, OR area in existence at that time: NORTH 909 N. Killingsworth St. 7825 N. Lombard St. (at Tyler Ave.) NORTHEAST NE 60th Ave. & Prescott St. NE 122nd Ave. & Halsey St. NE 181st ...

Of note: Buffalo is probably the largest city in the US to never have had an Albertsons, Kroger, or Safeway presence.

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
Fresh Market (former Albertsons) at 1638 S 900 E was a Safeway. Rancho (former Fresh Market, former Albertsons) 140 900 W was also a Safeway. I believe Albertsons bought 9 stores from Farmer Jack in Salt Lake City area. Between Albertsons new stores/capex throughout the 90's plus closures by Superv...

Re: Vintage Supermarkets in Movies and TV (Old Ones Only Please)
I was just watching Repo Man on Netflix on demand tonight and one of the early scenes has Otto tagging and stacking cans of generic cling peaches in a 'pik n' pay.' At the very end of the credits there is a special thanks to Ralphs Supermarkets which is what I'll assume they filmed it in. There are...
