Re: Florida Choice

I'm not sure how many Florida Choice stores existed down there in the 80's, but there was one in Cocoa (Rockedge, actually) that was a new build. The store didn't last long - maybe two years - but the design was much like the Kroger-Savon stores that were built in the Savannah, GA, and Charleston, S...

Re: JCPenney mall locations

The J. C. Penney's in Lakeshore Mall in Gainesville started out at the end of the mall, but ended up in a position in the center of the mall without ever moving. When the mall expanded, the addition was built onto the opposite side of Penney's mall entrance. This caused mall shoppers to enter Penney...

Re: Save Rite

The SaveRite north of Newnan, or Thomas Crossroad, sat vacant with signage intact until a month ago. The building is now being repurposed as a Goodwill Center. There is a lot of scaffolding around the exterior, so perhaps any sign of it being a 1995 Marketplace build turned into a SaveRite will disa...

Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at

Jackson's "Sooper" Market ...five-store chain with a store in Orlando and four stores in Brevard County, FL. Competed with A&P and Winn-Dixie, but done in by Publix by the mid-60's Setzer's ...Jacksonville, FL, chain mentioned on here previously in another post. Bargain Corner ...Savan...

Re: A&P in Manning, SC

Almost the same situation exists in Scottsboro, Alabama. Near to downtown, a centennial is on the west side of the street; a block further north and an older centennial is across the street. The newer centennial is larger, but it doesn't look like it's all that much bigger. I can't remember what is ...

Re: Winn Dixie District Orlando Map

How much territory did the Orlando district encompass? Were the Space Coast/Brevard County stores part of this district, or a differently district entirely? There were at least a dozen W-D stores in Brevard County at one point.

Re: Former Big Star/Colonial Locations Still Selling Groceries

Krogerclerk mentioned the Peachtree city, GA, Big Star/A&P/Harris Teeter/Kroger back in May, and I thought I had responded, but apparently I didn't. When A&P left the Atlanta area, Harris Teeter did put their only southside metro Atlanta store at that location in Peachtree City. Before openi...

Re: Eckerd's "leapfrog" development

Just a couple of things... CVS acquired Eckerd in Georgia, but only in parts of Georgia; the Atlanta metro stores became Rite-Aid, which already had a minimal presence in outlying county seats until this point. Some of these stores maintained the neon "Welcome to Eckerd" sign above the ent...

Re: A VA/WV-area Acme Markets chain?

It would be nice to see pictures of those stores. Acme never really did have an archiectural style, or "look," and so it will probably look as if Acme took over another store. In actuality, they were the original occupant of all of their buildings up until the seventies when names started ...

Re: Tampa Bay Area Photos

A couple of things... The unidentified building - now a post office - a 6706 Nebraska Avenue was probably an A&P. This location is within blocks of, and on the opposite side of the street from, the Publix shown just prior to that. There was also an A&P on Cocoa Beach with the same architectu...

As late as 1971, there was also an H.Salt location in Tampa, Florida. I'm not aware of any other Florida locations, but it's probable that there were others.

Re: Ketner and Milner Stores in North Carolina

Great research on that!! In looking at the pictures, I'm wondering who had the "complete food store" slogan first: Milner's or Winn-Dixie. Both pictures feature that slogan on their pylon. I'm betting on Milner/Piggly Wiggly.

Re: Sandusky (OH) Mall History

I know nothing about the mall in Sandusky, but I do know that LaSalle's was a Toledo, Ohio, based department store; they did have a branch in Sandusky, as well as one in downtown Tiffin, Ohio. The Tiffin store was open as late as 1983, and Tiffin also had a mall...of sorts, and I believe the anchors...

Re: Odd layouts

The Kroger at Braelinn Village* in Peachtree City, GA, also had a wall separating produce and the early versions of organic foods from the rest of the store. The wall, which was not a partition but went all the way to the ceiling, began about 1/4 of the way back into the store and continued uninterr...

Re: Odd layouts

The KMart in Peachtree City, GA, had the exact same layout until a re-do about two years ago. There was only one exception, and that was the restaurant and pharmacy were reversed. Those diagonal aisles looked diagonal from above, but when seen up close, they were just carpeted areas between racks an...
