Re: Albertsons Lawn and Garden Centers
Some of the family centers in Texas/Louisiana were successful for the company. I would agree that the selection was not the best in product and the focus was more on the grocery side than the GM side and a decision was made not to invest more time in the GM side and family centers went by the waysid...

Re: When/how did Kroger "conquer" the South?
I also forgot Beaumont and Orange. Beaumont has two Signature Stores, one older greenhouse and one new construction (early 2000's), and Orange a old family center that has been remodeled.

Re: Albertsons Lawn and Garden Centers
"Kroger initially swore up and down they weren't trying to compete with Walmart, and now they're adding clothes (of course, they kind of "cheated" since they owned Fred Meyer for years" Long before Kroger merged with Fred Meyer they sold clothing and everything else in the Family...

Re: When/how did Kroger "conquer" the South?
The San Marcos store was part of the San Antonio group along with New Braunfels. Both were Super Store II - about 30K size. They closed in 1992 with San Antonio. Austin and Waco closed earlier, along with the stores in the valley and Corpus. Kroger still has the outlying stores you mentioned - Bryan...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The store in the Woodlands on Rayford Sawdust was a greenhouse that was remodeled into a Signature Store before being replaced farther east with a new store. That store was bigger in square footage than most greenhouse stores in the division.

Re: Possible ex-Kroger
The Big Lots greenhouse was probably built in the late 70's or early 80's. It did not operate long as a Kroger before being replaced by the 45K greenhouse, probably in 82 to 84 I would say as those were big building years in Houston

Re: Closed Albertsons divisions
I also heard that HEB only wanted the store in Kerrville. I think Albertson's kept it open just to thumb it's nose at HEB. They had to take all as a package deal, and that has happened several times to different operators, or they take a store simply to close and keep the competition out. There norm...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
No, store numbers do not carry over or recycled. When property is bought or leased it is assigned a store number at that time and it keeps that number though the life. If the property is sold or not used and let go, I think that assigned store number can be recycled. It has to do something with acco...

Re: Possible ex-Kroger
That was a Kroger store. Probably what was called a Super Store II, which were smaller sized stores, around 30K square foot rather than the 45K size store. One thing that gives it way in the aerial shot is the covered up air intakes and fan exhaust for the engine room in the corner of the store. Thi...

Re: Early H-E-B stores (before the 2000s)
Here is an example of an older HEB store that is now a Big Lots. Google: 13914 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio, TX 78217. This used to be the typical HEB store in the 90's. It was closed when they moved across the road. They were about 40,000 to 50,000 square foot stores One of the HEB's in Corpus Chris...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The old Houston and Dallas Divisions (Now the Southwest Division) used pretty much this numbering system. There is a few crossovers and stores numbered out of the system, but they are few. The old Houston Division was 034, and stores were HP-997. HP standing for Henke Pillot. Dallas was 035, and I t...

Re: Closed Albertsons divisions
The Conroe Albertson's was part of the Dallas Division - as were the San Antonio stores until the distribution center opened in Katy, then Conroe transferred to Houston as well as the San Antonio stores. The Houston warehouse also supplied Albertson's in Louisiana, I think as far as Baton Rouge. San...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The Kroger greenhouse in College Station was numbered as a Family Center. The two store's in Bryan/College Station were 997 and 998. 900 numbers were Family Centers (at least in Texas). It might have been planned as one and numbered as such, then build at a greenhouse store instead. The replacement ...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The old Kroger Family Center in Conroe (now a Hobby Lobby) was opened in 1972, in October if I remember right. When it opened it was over 100,000 square feet. In later years a section of it was sub divided and the Little Ceasers, Hair Place and a couple other shops were cut into the north wall. That...
