Re: What's the history behind outdoor and indoor PlayPlaces??
I know this is a subject that doesn't seem to be brought up much, but I am wondering what the history is behind fast food restaurant PlayPlaces?? At McDonald's, Burger King, Carl's Jr, and Chick fil A. I know some areas of the country and certain restaurants phased out of these playgrounds years ag...

Re: Mistakes Which Led to A&P's Demise
This (661 Scotland Rd, Orange NJ) was an operational A&P store at least as late as 1973. I think that just about says it all... Yikes! Albertsons and Kroger kick around a few desolate stores in the 10,000 square feet range, but less than 2,000 square feet for a full grocery store? That would've...

Re: Mistakes Which Led to A&P's Demise
If A&P hadn't acquired Pathmark, it probably would've just been a more attractive takeover candidate. I think where A&P screwed up was in the point when they were acquiring other chains. Rather than build off the strengths and formats of its acquired chains, A&P immediately started to ch...

Re: Sears store-within-a-stores over the years
So did they just have a large part of the store that had been walled off and abandoned after Montgomery Ward closed? ...or did they pull out long before? The 1997 bankruptcy killed the specialty store business (Lechmere, stand-alone Electric Avenue, etc.). The store was subdivided. I'm not sure if ...

Re: "End of the line" supermarkets
With regards to Cala (Bell/QFI) - would the shortlived Delano's IGA that took over in 2007 count as a successor chain? (That chain then imploded in 2010 and I know at least two locations in SF have since become Grocery Outlet, specifically Geary and South Van Ness) Looks like yes, but they closed i...

Re: Sears store-within-a-stores over the years
Montgomery Ward had a full sized Toys "R" Us in their Gaithersburg MD location https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/business/1986/07/22/wards-toys-r-us-set-venture/c81f5478-5c29-4ce7-ad70-bc690de2ba2f/ Sears' K-B Toys experiment sounds more similar to Macy's current Toys R Us partnershi...

This article seems to indicate Chatham was converted by Great Scott, which means that those Chatham stores could still have converted to Kroger safely. Did Great Scott close down the Chatham stores when buying them?

Looks like it opened in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Re: Jewel in SoCal?
Jewel Tea (the actual tea shops and delivery business) had SoCal stores early on and delivery through at least the 1970s, per some LA Times references, but no locations of the supermarket chain AFAIK. And Sav-on Drugs was rebranded as Osco for a time. I wonder if either of those things might have c...

Re: NEW: Austin TX, 1924-1986
There are a few things relating Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Albertsons that I missed. - I read about the "store under construction" but now I no longer believe that to be true based on information. (Either way it's an H-E-B now.) - There weren't Jewel-Osco stores in Austin. Albertsons bought ...

Jewel in SoCal?
I was reading an article from Los Angeles Business Journal about Smith's "re-entry" into the SoCal market in the early 1990s (they had previously had stores in the 1970s). The article implied that SoCal was a tough market (and for Smith's, it was, as you know, they pulled out in 1996) list...

From what I could tell these were done in the early 2000s as a seasonal thing and not a year-round thing.
I'm more interested in regional departments...

The Great Albertsons Re-Numbering Kerfuffle
The classical Albertsons numbering system (not so much now) used four-digit numbers in an XXYY format. The XX numbers represented the division number while the YY was a numbered sequence in how they opened. The Albertsons Florida Division was a good example of this. Store 4356 opened in 1983 after a...

Re: Max Foods
From what I can find Max Foods started in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the early 1990s when Jewel-Osco was purchased ( link ). Despite American Stores still owning Jewel-Osco, there was a brief period of time when Albertsons took them over. The conversion was quick, just a brief closure in the nigh...

Re: Grand Union
Was Bolton Landing always a Grand Union? The store received "Grand Union Family Markets" signage after GU's bankruptcy, but the signage is in an oval shape (which Tops retained) not unlike A&P. Did it acquire the store from A&P at some point?
