Early H-E-B stores (before the 2000s)

Does anyone have any information on older H-E-B stores? Given that I'm only familiar with the Houston area H-E-B stores, I need help. From that, they first opened H-E-B Pantry Foods stores (small grocery stores 30,000 square feet) in suburban areas (mid-sized areas that weren't small towns but not h...

Re: Hinky Dinky and their leased grocery departments

According to Wikipedia, "Supermarkets International" leased food departments in the Treasury discount stores (and even a few JCPenney stores). JCPenney bought them in '69 but shut it down a few years later.

Re: Target '90s neon

I imagine the first generation SuperTargets had neon and the like on them as well.

Interesting that it started in 1990: the 1989 Gold Circle/Richway conversions did NOT have neon.

Re: Target '90s neon

Not neon on the outside, no! But some stores from 1995-1998 had stripes on the outside. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AcUdTl7Aq-s/R5ez13i7DLI/AAAAAAAADhg/jSnkpubHvP8/s400/Target+Golf+Mill_Cook+Cty.jpg (not the best picture, but it will do) Also, we're talking the 1990s neon. Red, blue, green, and yellow...

Re: Target '90s neon

Some of the stores had the red/blue/green striping on the outside. My 1992 Target did not, but I think it was seen at least from 1995 (RAM) to 1998 (Golf Mill). I remember one in Conroe built circa '98 that had it too on the outside.

Neon inside was definitely in '92 and in '95.

Target '90s neon

When was the era for the 1990s Target neon, the one with four colors (red, blue, yellow, green) and the "Food Avenue"? Obviously, it was gone by 2001, and not there yet in 1988 (the Gold Circle/Richway conversions didn't have it). When were there time? I know they were there at least 1992-...

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX

The first Bryan store was built well before the Houston division opened its first store, so yeah, it's probably true. The stores became the Houston (AppleTree) division later, unfortunately, the Hearne store had long been gone (as well as the original Bryan Safeway).

Re: Kroger Family Centers

I thought the fact that it appeared to be a Greenhouse in '77 would prove it wasn't. Guess I was right... So, even though that photo is black and white, do you suppose those darkish panels to the left of the store were direct relics of the Family Center era? By the way, NONE of the Kroger stores in ...

Re: Searstown shopping centers

Did all Searstown stores have a supermarket, and if so, with an interior entrance or without? Did any of them have discount stores?

Re: Kroger Family Centers

This 2004 guide to Bryan grocery stores distinctly has the Greenhouse exterior (notice roof and other decor elements), and opened in 1977. (It moved out sometime circa 2007 for a new store on the bypass) Besides, according to Pleasant Family Shopping, "Family Center" was used on some store...

Re: Albertsons in Houston

I know a Starbucks Coffee was inside a Kroger store (circa 2000, still there) and also inside an Albertsons (local one, College Station, TX) circa 2002 or so (and it was one of the first Starbucks in town, actually). The Albertsons one was shuttered a bit before the store started OOB sales in 2008. ...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

Someone (Scott, maybe?) posted on PFS about a Family Center in Bryan, TX. Sorry, no, that was not the case.

Re: Mini-Marina - Hearne, TX

OK...there's stronger evidence it was a Safeway. Wikipedia says they opened stores in Houston in '69, but there was a recorded instance of a Bryan store in 1964, which suggests that Safeway hit the smaller stores first before going for Houston. It also explains why there are no Marina stores in Hous...

Re: KMart Cafeteria and Other Restaurants

So let me get this straight...American Fare closes and reopens as a Kmart Super Center. As it reopens, a smaller Kmart closes nearby. Then the Kmart Super Center closes. Then it reopens. Then it closes again for good? Confusing.
