Re: NEW: Jamestown NY 1924-2020
Quality was a home town chain. They expanded into various small towns in Western NY and NW Pennsylvania, event7ally having some locations in the Buffalo area. They were bought by Penn Traffic (Riverside, Bi-Lo), whose bankruptcy lead to their demise.

Re: NEW: Akron, 1939-2020
Century entered the market independently from Loblaw and then Loblaw later bought the stores in 1961 and combined the two chains, which is why they had so many stores in Cuyahoga Falls. The West Market Century opened in 1952. There’s a link to the grand opening somewhere online. I wouldn’t be sur ...

Re: KFC Chicken... being sold at other restaurants via a franchise
The last full-line Kenny Kings closed in 2011 and it had operated since 1970: https://www.cleveland.com/pdextra/2011/04/regulars_turn_out_for_wake_fin.html The store design was pretty standard for its time. Our Kenny Kings had a large dining room and a vaguely colonial motif but had started out as ...

Re: Mistakes Which Led to A&P's Demise
A&P began transitioning to supermarkets at the right time (late 30s) and although the business press thought they didn't have enough suburban stores, they went into the 'burbs with everyone else. They stayed in city neighborhoods longer than other chains, though. Once the Hartfords withdrew from ...

Re: Centennial A&P locations
The end of the Centennial era was around 1972. The late Centennials were about 19K sf like all the other ones. I recall one in MentOr Ohio which opened in the late 60s and replaced a nearly identical store a mile away. One of the last was in Madison, Ohio and that was nearly identical to older ...

Re: Centennial A&P locations
The large Centennial that stands out in memory was in Simsbury CT. It operated as Fitzgerald's, which is still around but seems to be in a different location. There is a brick small Centennial that was altered but operated as an A&P/Super Fresh until they left the DC area. I think it's been ...

The Springfield Finast looks like a Safeway Marina design like this one from the Pleasant Family Shopping blog (below), which even has some mural work at the entrance. If so, it probably was under construction when Finast bought Safeway's NYC Division. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ei2Ik5quiI0 ...

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
Although I cannot figure out how to post an image from Newspapers.com that allows one to zoom in, I think I figured out a way to share a link which allows one to view an image or article (and enlarge it) properly. In 1977 and 1978, a number of ShopRite newspaper ads listed all of the chain's ...

Re: What happened to drugstore lunch counters?
Growing up in suburban St. Louis, the Walgreens at Crestwood Plaza (built roughly 1958) had a lunch counter until the mall was fully enclosed (it was built as an open air mall with Kroger at one end, Sears and Woolworth mid and Vandervoort's (department store) at the far end. Mid 60s an enclosed ...

Interesting that they were mostly a small town operator by that point. No stores in Syracuse (maybe I'm missing some suburbs), but just a few in the Buffalo and Rochester areas. They also covered a lot of ground from Erie PA (where they never had more than a couple stores) to the "North Country ...
