Mario and Luigi's Pizzeria
Does anyone remember Mario and Luigi's , a pizzeria in Redmond, WA? It was the inspiration behind the name Luigi, a Nintendo video game character who made his debut in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. In other words, does M & L's still exist? Regardless, I would like to see pictures of it, pleas...

Thriftway's "You Save More" Slogan/Jingle
Who remembers the Thriftway Stores jingle "You save more ... shopping at your Thriftway store!"? This slogan/jingle was adopted by the Portland, OR-based advertising cooperative (then a member of United Grocers) during the summer of 1979. I remembered this jingle playing on the radio and i...

Vintage Photos - Fred Meyer's Key Locations Since 1922
Hi, Does anyone have photographs of all the "key" Fred Meyer locations, those that set trends in the company's history since its 1922 founding? Their key locations: 5th & S.W. Yamhill (1922-c. 1942) - no address given in the FM d'base I have 6th & S.W. Washington (1933-1963) - 514 ...

Re: The Different Formats of Fred Meyer
I know that there was actually a fairly recent major remodel of the Bellevue store (sometime within the last five years or so) although I can't be exactly sure of when that was. The one in Kirkland may also be known as the Totem Lake store. If you need the address, it's 12221 120th Ave NE, Kirkland...

Re: The Different Formats of Fred Meyer
Could I get dates on the Bellevue and Kirkland WA stores? I've been meaning to go dig up some of the history of the Bellevue store (which went through both White Front and Valu-Mart\Leslies before finally ending up as a Fred Meyer) and it would be helpful to have at least a month to look at before ...

Re: The Different Formats of Fred Meyer
Fred Meyer has also consolidated back into one building at the following locations: Longview, 3184 Ocean beach Highway. Store opened in mid-70s. Major remodel in 1989, main store addition on west end, for apparel department. Home improvement, garden center, sporting goods, and automotive moved into...

Re: The Different Formats of Fred Meyer
A week ago I was in Portland, and noticed that Fred Meyer has shut down the seperate Home Improvement building at 82nd & Foster, and the main store has been remodeled into a Marketplace store with no apparel department. This is one of the last Fred Meyer stores which had the home improvement ce...

Re: History of Safeway in Portland, OR Since 1921
Ben (and other interested parties): I'd love to add a Portland area feature, so contributions are most welcome. A comprehensive Safeway list would be a great start. And if anyone came up with info on other chains, that would be great too. It's an area I'd love to reseach on my own if time and geogr...

Safeway Marinas with Murals Instead of "Circle S" Markers
How long did Safeway utilize the trend of painted murals for their left and right entrance markers rather than using their "Circle S" logos? I know their flagship Marina store on 15 Marina Blvd. in San Francisco, CA was one and their 1965 Lake Oswego, OR store on 401 "A" Ave. was...

Portland-Area Safeway Boxes and Marinas Falsefronted?
Just how many Portland-area Safeways had been falsefronted from their original shoebox (1940s-1959) and Marina (1959-1969) incarnations? I can think of but a few: "Shoebox" era: 3940 SE Powell Blvd, Portland 97202 - rebuilt into "Brown" store, 1974 10554 SE Main St, Milwaukie 972...

Re: Safeway - SW 10th & Jefferson (Original, 1962-2003)
Dave,
Looking at that, it makes me want to clarify this:
When Safeway had rebuilt the facade on this store sometime in the 1970s, it jumps out at me that they tried to hide the arch as best as possible.

Safeway - SW 10th & Jefferson (Original, 1962-2003)
Hi, Is there any proof that the original Safeway on SW 10th & Jefferson in Portland, OR, at address 1025 SW Jefferson St (which opened in August 1962 and was replaced in late 2003), had originally been built as a "Marina" prototype (with the then-omnipresent "Marina" arched r...

Fred Meyer - Peninsula
I have noticed that when Fred Meyer's Peninsula location (at 6850 N Lombard St in Portland, OR) was remodeled in 1978, there was a newer road sign, but I noticed it was not even located close to the main store (but the original 1962 road sign was, until it got replaced in the late 1990s). http://far...

Re: Jewel Lake Safeway In Alaska Closed 1988
Didn't Safeway have substantial labor problems in Anchorage? Those would be part of the reason for this store's untimely closure.
