Re: Safeway locations-Oakland, Calif.-1963
The rug store at College and Kales is a very standard Safeway design from the 1940s; there were hundreds of these and there may be more of these still standing and relatively unaltered than any of Safeway's past designs. The only reason I knew about that location was because my vocal coach had her ...

Re: Safeway locations-Oakland, Calif.-1963
The former Safeway at 40th and Telegraph has been mentioned on here before; it houses an imported car parts store behind the two-story Mercedes-Benz dealership on the corner. The newer building is built on the old parking lot. The building at College and Kales has a rug store now. I would never have...

Re: Millbrae Marina replaced with new lifestyle Safeway
It's quite something. I've not seen any other grocery with an escalator and ground floor parking.

Re: Former Lucky closing @ 3250 Lakeshore Ave. in Oakland, CA
This store has been reborn as a Trader Joe's. I believe there's also a drugstore attached, but Google maps does not list that.
[Added note: it's a Walgreen's ] It's great to see this building get recycled. That's interesting about the Long's store in front of it being the first Lucky in Oakland.

Re: Richmond/El Cerrito (California) area sights
Hi All-- I'm glad to see plans to do something with the abandoned Target building. The Safeway location will only move 10 blocks or so, but the new location is a better one. It has access to BART trains, and there's a commercial strip right across the street--Orchard Supply Hardware, and several oth...

- 1960s era Lucky sitting abandoned on I think San Pablo Avenue, obvious Lucky labelscars on the sides of the building and on the old "needle" styled lighted sign; was this store replaced by the Albertsons at El Cerrito Plaza? This store is a block from a modern Safeway. Not sure if this ...

From the Hahn wikipedia article: In 1980 Trizec Corp., Toronto, Canada, acquired the shopping center interests of developer Ernest M. Hahn, who had developed many leading major shopping center, especially in California. So it seems that the Hahn company might have planned Fashion Island, but did not...

Thanks for posting the picture, Questioner. I never saw the building up close; only the top of the tenting that showed from the freeway. I used your link above, Justin, and I'm sure that the Irvine company did indeed build both Fashion Island malls. Irvine has land holdings here in the Bay area. I c...
