Re: Stores that never were: Sacramento edition
About a decade plus ago, Sonic Drive-In was supposed to open their first Sacramento location in the Natomas area. Construction started if I am not mistaken, but then the project was halted. It apparently was revived in 2021! then canceled once more in 2023. https://www.natomasbuzz.com/2023/03/sonic ...

Saw this 1960s footage of the Valley Fair area where the Safeway in its original Circle S signage can be seen:

One of the interior pics provided to google maps shows some lettering on the wall for Pinatas, unclear if this is reused old lettering from the Safeway era though:

Forgot to update this thread, another local Asian chain has now leased the building though it doesn't appear to have reopened yet:

Re: "End of the line" supermarkets
With regards to Cala (Bell/QFI) - would the shortlived Delano's IGA that took over in 2007 count as a successor chain? (That chain then imploded in 2010 and I know at least two locations in SF have since become Grocery Outlet, specifically Geary and South Van Ness)

Re: Historical Information About ShopRite Locations (Past & Present)
Out here in the chain's home region (San Francisco Bay Areas), I can think of two Safeway marina buildings that had murals: - San Francisco at the namesake Marina Boulevard site, still there but moved from their orginal spot after a 1995 remodel of the store https://www.alamy.com/mural-on-marina ...

Safeway's old Omaha division closed down entirely in 1982, which was several years before the KKR buyout (and less than a decade and a half since this particular location had closed) - https://www.upi.com/Archives/1982/02/18/Safeway-Stores-Inc-plans-to-close-68-stores-in/8633382856400/#:~:text ...

Really informative page on a former marina Safeway in North Omaha
A long-form piece on the Safeway's three years (1965-1968) of attempting to operate a store in North Omaha - with a lot of wider historical context about the neighborhood's Black heritage and how redevelopment of the site has been a challenge for decades. https://northomahahistory.com/2022/10/10/a ...

Sports Basement in SF Presidio - what grocery was here before?
I went to the Sports Basement sporting goods store a couple of days ago in the Presidio in San Francisco...and noticed lots of food-department labeling (i.e. Milk, Dairy) and a layout that unmistakeably used to be a grocery tsore! https://ir.4sqi.net/img/general/original/30332547_mvHx3SWLA3JZW ...

Re: New location list: San Mateo County
Update on the former marina Safeway, later Pacific Super, at St. Francis Square in Daly City (1420 Southgate Avenue) -
Entire building has been demolished as of yesterday evening (3/15/23), as opposed to when the general shell was still up and gutted about 2 weeks previous.

Re: New location list: San Mateo County
Just saw on a mid-century modern group I'm in, a photo of the 1963-early 2010s marina Safeway in Millbrae when it first opened! (Got permission from the original image poster, Chris Rooney, to share this) I went here once in 2009 or 2010 when it was still a Marina, but with the opaque name panel on ...
