Re: Guam- Safeway
I believe that the Jones Act, in effect from the 1920s to present, applies to ocean shipping between any port in the United States (the 50 states) and Guam. So some U.S.-flagged ocean liner likely supplies Guam from Hawai'i or the mainland U.S. Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, Matson, APL (America...

Re: What grocery store was this? (Modesto)
How extensive was Lucky's territory in California's Central Valley? Did Lucky exit the Central Valley market before its 1999 "merger" with Albertson's? If the Central Valley "Lucky" stored were re-branded "Albertson's" in 1999 and, if so, if any of those store locations...

A Mayfair supermarket exterior in Malibu, Calif. (Heathercliff Rd.) appeared in the background of a shot in a season 3 episode of "CHiPs" titled "Valley Go Home!" It first aired in September of 1979. The shot can be seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSg2TVFI3Qw ...

Texas (probably Dallas-Ft. Worth) - Safeway - 1962 Movie
The SMU Jones film collection at Southern Methodist University has posted black and white, silent moving pictures of a Safeway store from circa 1962, probably in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OltO_ezwHdI The film lasts 47 seconds. It begins with an exterior shot of ...

Fred Meyer Chain - 100th Anniversary: 1922-2022 - "Shelby Report of the West" April 2022 Edition
The "Shelby Report of the West" April 2022 edition contains a lengthy commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Fred Meyer chain. Bob Reeves conducted interviews; Kevin Atwill compiled them. The article says that in 2022, there are 132 Fred Meyer stores in four states: 11 locations in ...

Re: NEW: Portland (Oregon) 1932-1987
The "Shelby Report of the West" April 2022 edition contains a lengthy commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Fred Meyer chain. It states on its first page, "His was one of the first stores in the country to open with so many categories under one roof - truly one-stop shopping. ...

Texas-Dallas-Knox Street Village area Safeway store-1976
The Jones Film Collection at Southern Methodist University (SMU) apparently includes news film from WFAA-TV (channel 8/Dallas). A December 1976 WFAA-TV news story about commercial signage includes images of the exterior of a Safeway store. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO3jqMKfJFI Go to 1:11 ...

Ralphs Supermarket-Los Angeles-Wilshire Blvd. at Hauser Blvd.-Circa 1920s
The Ralphs supermarket building at Wilshire Blvd. and Hauser Blvd. is one of the grandest grocery buildings that I've ever seen in a photograph. That store building apparently was erected in the 1920s. See: https://martinturnbull.com/2018/07/10/ralphs-supermarket-on-wilshire-blvd-at-hauser-blvd-with...

Re: Safeway, 30 Chestnut Avenue, South San Francisco
The analog clock photo reminds me the downtown Livermore, Calif. Safeway had a similar clock in the late 1980s. As I recall, it was above the main exit door of the store. Next to the clock was a long rectangular advertising space. (Actually the clock and the advertising space were one long panel, if...

Fresno Area - 1980s - Foodland Chain
Does anyone know about the history of the "Foodland" chain in the Fresno area? I am curious if it was connected with other "Foodland" stores elsewhere in the U.S.A. (such as in Hawai'i). I stopped at one in the Fresno area in June of 1981. It was somewhere in the State Route 180 ...

Re: Los Angeles-1960s-Supermarket on La Brea Avenue-Mentioned in 1965 Picture "The Loved One"
After re-listening to the dialogue, I've determined that the movie character (Mr. Joyboy) refers to "the Food Giant supermarket, the one on La Brea Street." Presumably that was a real supermarket in the Los Angeles area in the early 1960s.

Pleasanton, Calif.-Safeway Store Locations
There have been at least three Safeway store locations in Pleasanton, Calif. (which eventually became the city where the Safeway headquarters were located): (1) 749 Main Street (source: "Oakland Tribune" advertisement, January 1963) (2) Santa Rita Road/Valley Avenue - opened mid-1960s, clo...

Safeway-Vancouver, B.C.-Kingsway & Knight Street-c. 1966
The British Columbia Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has digitized (digitised, eh?) some of its "photolog" series of photos of its highway system from circa 1966. One photo appears to depict a Safeway store pylon sign along Route 1 at Kingsway and Knight Street in Vancouver. See: ...
