This one was surprisingly interesting and resulted in almost 400 locations. Chattanooga was once a relatively large city and major player in the region and also kept small neighborhood stores longer than many cities.

Re: White Front Stores
Yes, they were spaces leased to an established grocer who got to use the White Front Foods name. In the Seattle area, the grocery departments were operated by Tradewell. The San Francisco White Front on 16th Street (open 17 October 1968, closed early 1973) had a supermarket attached that was appare...

Re: What grocery store was this? (Modesto)
The Stockton and Modesto lucky stores were sold to Save Mart in the early 1990s IIRC and were thus unaffected by the merger; they were already operating as Save Mart (or S-Mart in Stockton due to a pre-existing Save-Mart chain there) long before 1999. Lucky also operated briefly in Fresno in the ear...

Something for your Saturday afternoon viewing pleasure:

A lot of the early stores are gone, but there are some nice 1950s/1960s artifacts including several Safeway pylon stores and a relatively intact Safeway/Super S on Grant Road.

Re: What grocery store was this? (Modesto)
Lucky Stores, historically one of the largest chains in California. Penn Fruit never operated outside a few Mid-Atlantic/East Coast states. Just FYI, Modesto is one of about 200 cities that is featured here on the site: https://www.groceteria.com/place/california/modesto-and-turlock/ Lucky Stores: h...

Re: NEW: Louisville KY, 1922 and 1946-2022
Apparently Hinky-Dinky/Supermarkets Interstate had a couple locations in Louisville in the mid-60s incorporated in a couple of the more esoteric discount stores (Globe/Ontario/Arlans/National Bellas Hess...)...there is some evidence of this within the Hinky-Dinky corporate newsletter archives which...

Re:
Doris Day's last movie was "With Six You Get Eggroll". In one scene, she is shopping in a market and runs into Brian Keith, who was supposed to be picking up a client at the airport. Anyway, does anyone know if that was filmed in a real market or on a sound stage? Old post, but I actually...

This turned out to be bigger and more interesting than I expected, though a lot of Birmingham's built environment has been lost to depopulation and disinvestment in the past fifty or sixty years:
