Re: NEW: Kansas City MO, 1925-1992

Now updated to include 1945 as I was finally able to get access to a directory for that year.

Re: NEW: Bloomfield and Montclair NJ, 1925-1971

Apparently the Bloomfield Avenue Food Fair was some sort of catalog showroom for years after FF moved out (and long before Whole Paycheck arrived). I've got one or two photos of other stores with the interlocking arches. I know one in Philly was still standing as recently as a couple of years ago. I...

Yes, I've been busy this week. This one was much more straightforward than Peoria, at least:

Thanks! Duly noted.

NEW: Peoria, 1925-2021

This one took some time. About 75% of the streets were renumbered in 1955-56 and I cross-checked the addresses for updates as closely as I could. I also did not have access to newspapers as a fall-back.

Re: NEW: Sioux City, 1925-2021

In Sioux City, National followed its expansion playbook to the letter: Buy out a local chain, rebrand all the stores, compete ineffectually for a decade or two, and withdraw from the market with a whimper. Pretty much. In some of these areas, they never even built a new store (or maybe just one or ...

Re: Save-Rite Food Town name question

Thanks, that makes sense! But what were the names of the other two chains? The chain owned by Heffner was called (surprise) "Heffner's." Not sure about the Walker chain. Most versions of the Food Town print logo that I've seen (in ads, on grocery sacks, etc.) gave "Save-Rite" to...

Re: Save-Rite Food Town name question

I really should read that whole book again. It’s been like 20 years. Since it lacks an index, I only found the part about the warehouse when I was skimming through tonight. I missed the one store they renamed. Thanks!

Re: Save-Rite Food Town name question

Actually, it was a joint cooperative warehousing venture that Food Town started with two other small NC chains in 1967 so they could cut ties with MDI, the large distributor. But still, other than the signage, I don’t think they ever used Save-Rite in any significant way in their branding. The store...
