Re: NEW: Santa Fe 1930-2020

Just FYI, I have added some extra details regarding the store mentioned above, and unrelated information on several of the local chains.

Re: NEW: Altoona, 1925-2020

So, my long-shot questions are: in your work on Altoona, were you able to learn anything about the AP district office there? Is there any chance that any sort of records survive? More general question, do you have any idea what the store hours would have been for a 1941 A&P? Any direction would...

Re: KFC Chicken... being sold at other restaurants via a franchise

Franchising the chicken as a product rather than a restaurant brand was the whole M.O. in the early years of KFC. The package consisted of the recipes, the fryers, some operating procedures, and the license to use the name. It was probably the late 60s/early 70s before it was served exclusively in K...

Re: NEW: Wheeling WV, 1926-2024

Hmm, no trace of Loblaws? That chain did exist in Weirton and Steubenville around 1960, but i guess this proves they didn't go any further downstream than that. I'd initially expected some too. Nothing in the directories, though, and as I was looking at the newspapers today the only mention of Lobl...

Re: NEW: Wheeling WV, 1926-2024

4141 Jacob St (42nd & Jacob) opened as a Thorofare in 1959, was purchased by By-Rite in 1963 Thanks! I had wondered whether Thorofare ever had a presence in Wheeling. Will update. Thanks also for the pointer to the Wheeling newspaper archive, which will allow me to dive more deeply into some ot...

NEW: Wheeling WV, 1926-2024

Kind of depressing to see the decline over time.

Re: NEW: Macon GA 1925-2020

It's very sad that Edric Floyd, who was from the area, apparently passed away several years ago. He probably could have shined some light on all this.

Re: NEW: Winchester and Harrisonburg VA

I have data that shows there was another Safeway in Winchester at 150 Getty Lane (opposite the Martins on Gateway Drive). This was a 40K sf Super Store and was open from 1980 to 1984 The building looks right. It probably opened too late for the 1980 directory and closed before the 1985. I'll add it...

Re: NEW: Macon GA 1925-2020

Edric's reference has to have been to the 680 2nd Street location, which opened in 1951. I can't find any evidence that there was much of anything in the 1000 block of 3rd Street but a drive-in restaurant. The Forsyth Street store opened in 1948 and was indeed listed as 513 until the renumbering a y...

Re: NEW: Macon GA 1925-2020

My guess is that he was mistakenly referring to the one at 680 2nd St., which is actually an electrical supply store now. When I have a chance, I’lil make sure what else may or may not have been in the 1000 block of 3rd, but that seems a little too close to the 2nd Street store to have been an addit...

This one was a challenge due to a major street renumbering about 1949.

NEW: Augusta GA 1925-2024

Big variety here, including two failed attempts by Harris Teeter and also what seems to be a semi-rare (for this area) Pantry Pride/JM Fields combo.
